The dragon is made first. Then the back ground is added on just around just the wings. Then the head, tail, and legs are sewn to the background. Yarn choices. The first dragon shawl I made I used a variegated yarn with short color changes for both the dragon and the background. The dragon's features blended in and you couldn't see them It showed up clearly in white. But one tester used purple, and she wasn't pleased with how well you could see the dragon.

Dragon Shawl by Spider Mambo

What Is Being Made

The Dragon Shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl featuring a dragon motif as the central design element. This downloadable crochet pattern from independent designer Spider Mambo offers flexibility in finished size and yarn choice, with multiple construction options available. The shawl can be worked in a single color or two contrasting colors to enhance the dragon design.

Pattern Construction Method

The Dragon Shawl is constructed using a specific build sequence where the dragon is made first, followed by additional shawl sections. This modular approach allows crafters to create a cohesive design with the dragon as the focal point. The pattern accommodates different yarn weights and hook sizes, making it adaptable to individual preferences and yarn stash availability.

Crochet Stitches Used

The Dragon Shawl pattern incorporates a variety of intermediate-level crochet stitches to create texture and dimension:

  • Foundation stitches: Chain (ch) and slip stitch (sl st)
  • Basic stitches: Single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), and double crochet (dc)
  • Tall stitches: Triple crochet (tr) and specialty variations including double-wrap triple (DB tr) and quadruple-wrap triple (TR tr)
  • Post stitches: Front post single crochet (FP SC), front post triple crochet (FP TR), and back post triple crochet (BP TR) for creating textured, dimensional effects
  • Finishing stitch: Reverse single crochet (Rev sc), also known as crab stitch, for a decorative edged border

Crochet Techniques

This intermediate-level pattern employs post stitches extensively, which require working into the post (vertical section) of previous stitches rather than into the top loops. This technique creates raised, textured fabric ideal for defining the dragon motif against the background shawl. The pattern also uses specialty wrapped stitches (DB tr and TR tr) that add height and visual interest to specific design areas.

Materials and Yarn Options

The Dragon Shawl pattern provides flexibility with multiple yarn and finished size combinations:

  • Two-Color Version: Uses medium weight yarn with a G hook, creating a finished shawl measuring 67 inches by 33 inches. Materials include 1 ball of Patons Sequin Lace (344 yards) for the background and 2 balls of Metallic yarn (504 yards) for the dragon, totaling approximately 848 yards.
  • Single-Color Version (Worsted Weight): Uses Joann's Sensations Caribbean yarn with a G hook, finished measurements of 72 by 42 inches, requiring 2 balls (910 yards total).
  • Lightweight Cotton Version: Features crochet cotton thread size #10 with a size 2.50 hook, producing a smaller finished shawl measuring 55 by 23 inches and requiring 1000 yards of thread.

Gauge and Sizing Flexibility

This pattern is designed with flexibility in mind—gauge is not important for successful completion. Crafters are encouraged to work until the shawl reaches their preferred size, allowing for customization based on personal preference and available yarn. The pattern recommends selecting the hook size that works best with your chosen yarn, emphasizing adaptability over strict gauge requirements.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Dragon Shawl requires familiarity with multiple crochet stitch types and post stitch techniques. While not suitable for complete beginners, crafters with foundational crochet skills and experience working with various stitch heights and post stitches will find this pattern manageable and rewarding.

I have been crocheting for 52 years and I found the directions confusing and the resulting piece did not look anything like the picture. Ended up taking it all out and restarting twice with the same result. Disappointed.
