Double Treble Sweater by Stephanie Piper

Project Overview

The Double Treble Sweater is an intermediate-level crochet design created by independent designer Stephanie Piper. This downloadable PDF pattern guides crafters through constructing a comfortable, textured sweater using the distinctive linked double treble stitch technique. The garment is worked in worsted weight yarn, making it an accessible project for crocheters with some experience in stitch construction and garment assembly.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a fitted crewneck sweater suitable for everyday wear. The design features alternating rows of half double crochet and linked double treble stitches, creating a visually interesting texture throughout the body and sleeves. The sweater is available in eight sizes with yardage requirements ranging from 600 to 880 yards, accommodating various body measurements and fit preferences.

Crochet Techniques Used

The Double Treble Sweater employs several fundamental crochet techniques combined with a specialty stitch method. The pattern utilizes standard construction methods including in-the-round shaping for the body and sleeves, as well as armhole joining techniques. The signature technique featured in this design is the Linked Double Treble (LDTR), a more advanced stitch variation that creates dimensional texture. The pattern includes specific instructions for the first linked double treble of each round and when joining armholes, which requires chaining four stitches and drawing up loops across multiple chain stitches before connecting to the previous round. Subsequent linked double trebles are worked by drawing up loops in the horizontal strands crossing the post of the previous stitch, demonstrating the interconnected nature of this technique.

Stitches Featured

  • Chain (ch) – The foundation stitch used to begin the pattern and create turning chains
  • Single Crochet (sc) – A basic short stitch used for finishing and joining
  • Half Double Crochet (hdc) – A medium-height stitch that alternates with linked double trebles throughout the design
  • Linked Double Treble (LDTR) – The signature stitch of this sweater, a taller stitch that creates texture by linking consecutive stitches together through their posts and horizontal strands
  • Back Loops Only (blo) – A technique applied to stitches to create ribbed or textured edges

Materials and Tools Required

Crafters will need Caron Simply Soft yarn or a comparable worsted weight yarn (weight category 4) in quantities ranging from 600 to 880 yards depending on the chosen size. The pattern calls for two crochet hooks: a 5 mm hook (size H) and a 6.5 mm hook (size K). The larger 6.5 mm hook is used for the main fabric and gauge swatch, while the smaller hook may be used for finishing details. Additional supplies include a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and scissors for cutting yarn.

Gauge and Construction Details

Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished measurements. The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 inches by 4 inches (10 stitches by 5 rows) worked in alternating half double crochet and linked double treble rows, starting and ending with half double crochet rows using the 6.5 mm hook. Crocheters should work a gauge swatch before beginning the sweater to ensure their tension matches the pattern specifications, which will affect the final fit and drape of the garment.
