Product Description
Dotted Ladder Socks are knitted top down and feature a 2-color slipped stitch pattern, worked with only one color at a time. The reason for this pair of socks was to try out an integrated heel method. Ideal for knitting both socks on one circular needle, at the same time. The resulting integrated heel looks like the regular heel flap and gusset construction, but is accomplished without picking up any heel flap stitches. This heel construction is surprisingly easy and will soon become the go-to method for all knitters wanting to knit 2 socks at the same time.
For the best size selection, measure your foot circumference around the widest part of your foot.
To use scarp sock yarn for the coordinating color, make sure you have at least 25 grams available.
Dotted Ladder Socks by Renate Kamm
Project Overview
Dotted Ladder Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Renate Kamm, created to showcase an innovative integrated heel construction method. These top-down socks feature a distinctive 2-color slipped stitch pattern that creates a dotted ladder visual effect. The design is ideal for knitters who want to work both socks simultaneously on a single circular needle, making this an efficient project for producing a matching pair.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The socks are worked top down, beginning at the cuff and progressing toward the toe. The most notable technical feature is the integrated heel method, which produces the appearance of a traditional heel flap and gusset construction without requiring knitters to pick up stitches from a heel flap. This innovative approach simplifies the heel-turning process while maintaining the classic sock silhouette. The integrated heel is designed to be surprisingly straightforward, making it an accessible technique for knitters seeking an alternative to conventional heel construction methods.
The colorwork is accomplished using a 2-color slipped stitch pattern, worked with only one color at a time. This technique eliminates the complexity of carrying multiple colors across rows, as slipped stitches create the pattern effect while keeping the working yarn simple and manageable. This approach is particularly suited to sock knitting, where managing multiple colors in the round can be challenging.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The pattern employs slipped stitches as the primary stitch technique for creating the dotted ladder colorwork effect. Slipped stitches allow the pattern to develop visually without the knitter having to manage two active colors simultaneously, reducing tension issues and simplifying the knitting process.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern calls for two coordinating yarns in 4-ply and sport weights:
- Main Color (MC): Queensland Collection United in Marsh (55% Lambswool/45% Cotton blend, 1.76oz/50g per ball, 251 yards/230 meters per ball). Two balls are required for the main color.
- Coordinating Color (CC): Knit Picks Stroll in Mint (75% Fine Superwash Merino Wool/25% Nylon blend, 1.76oz/50g per ball, 231 yards/212 meters per ball). One ball is required, or approximately 100 yards/97 meters of compatible sock yarn.
Needles: US 2 / 3mm circular needles, approximately 47 inches / 120 centimeters long, to accommodate working both socks at once on a single needle using the two-at-a-time method.
Sizing
The pattern is available in four sizes based on foot circumference:
- XS: 7 inches / 17.5 centimeters
- S: 8 inches / 20 centimeters
- M: 9.5 inches / 24 centimeters
- L: 11 inches / 28 centimeters
Difficulty Level
Dotted Ladder Socks are rated as intermediate difficulty, appropriate for knitters with foundational sock-knitting experience who are ready to explore advanced heel techniques and colorwork methods. The integrated heel construction, while described as surprisingly easy, requires familiarity with basic sock anatomy and the ability to work in the round.
