Product Description
Introducing Dorothy, an all‐season, knitted, leaf lace shell. Its simple sleeveless shape with easy‐to-remember lace pattern – a 10 stitch by 12 row repeat – is a perfect introductory project for lace knitting. Wear it sleeveless with a camisole, or with short or long sleeves beneath, allowing their color to peek through. The airy fabric pools slightly as it drapes from the shoulders to the high hip hem line. Choose sizing without ease based on bust measure. Dorothy is worked in the round, from the bottom up, until the start of the armholes where it splits and is worked back and forth. Stitches are picked up around the neckline and armholes for garter trimming. You’ll find this to be a quick knit – a fun and satisfying project!
SKILLS REQUIREDLong-tail cast on, circular knitting, decreasing (skp, sk2p, k2tog, p2tog, p2tog tbl), increasing (yo), lace shaping, stitch pick up around neckline and armholes, short row shaping and 3-needle BO, and blocking.
Dorothy Knitted Leaf Lace Shell by Deb Hoss
What is Being Made
Dorothy is an all-season, sleeveless knitted shell featuring an elegant leaf lace pattern. This versatile top can be worn as a standalone sleeveless piece over a camisole, or layered with short or long sleeves underneath to create different styling options. The garment is designed with a high hip hemline and features airy fabric that pools slightly as it drapes from the shoulders, creating a flattering silhouette. Available in seven sizes ranging from XS to 3X, Dorothy is designed to be worn with zero ease based on bust measurement for a precise, custom fit.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
Dorothy is constructed using a bottom-up, in-the-round knitting method, which creates a seamless garment from the hem upward. The knitter works in continuous rounds until reaching the armhole shaping, at which point the pattern transitions to flat, back-and-forth knitting to shape the front and back panels separately. This hybrid construction method combines the efficiency of circular knitting with the shaping control of flat knitting. After the main body is complete, stitches are strategically picked up around both the neckline and armholes to add garter stitch trimming, which provides a neat, finished edge and adds structural definition to these openings.
Stitches and Lace Pattern
The signature element of Dorothy is its simple, easy-to-remember leaf lace pattern, which repeats over 10 stitches and 12 rows. This repeating pattern makes it an excellent introductory project for knitters new to lace knitting, as the repeat is short enough to memorize quickly without becoming tedious. The pattern incorporates several fundamental lace and shaping stitches, including:
- Yarn overs (yo) – used to create the openwork eyelets characteristic of lace
- Decreases – including skp (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over), sk2p (slip, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over), k2tog (knit 2 together), p2tog (purl 2 together), and p2tog tbl (purl 2 together through the back loop) – used for both lace shaping and garment shaping
- Increases – yarn overs and other increase methods for expanding the garment width
- Garter stitch – used for the neckline and armhole trims
Required Knitting Skills
Dorothy is rated as an intermediate-level project and requires proficiency with the following skills:
- Long-tail cast-on method for a secure, elastic foundation
- Lace shaping techniques to create the leaf pattern motifs
- Decreases and increases for both lace pattern work and garment shaping
- Stitch pickup around armholes and neckline to add finishing trims
- Ability to transition between circular and flat knitting
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Dorothy is designed to be knitted in DK weight yarn, a medium-light yarn that works well for creating the airy, draping fabric characteristic of lace shells. DK weight provides the perfect balance between stitch definition for the leaf lace pattern and fabric fluidity for the elegant drape described in the pattern. The specific yardage requirements and needle size are provided within the downloadable PDF pattern. Circular needles are required for the in-the-round construction, and straight needles or the circular needle in flat mode are used for the back-and-forth sections.
Project Summary
Dorothy is described as a quick knit and a fun, satisfying project that combines the appeal of a classic lace shell with accessible, intermediate-level techniques. The simple 10-stitch by 12-row repeat makes it ideal for knitters looking to expand their lace skills without overwhelming complexity. The sleeveless design and versatile styling options make Dorothy a practical addition to any wardrobe, while the leaf lace pattern adds visual interest and sophistication.
