Product Description
Since I live in Kansas, I thought I would do an Oz series of Bookmarks. Here is the Dorothy and Toto Reading Character Bookmark for anyone who loves adventure. The pattern includes an option of Toto in a basket.
The crochet stitches include, sc, hdc, dc, tr and sl st and front loop and back loop work. The pattern includes description of abbreviations, complete instructions and pictural tutorial.
This is a fun and easy bookmark to make.
It uses small amounts of crochet thread and many colors can be used so it is a great project to use up small amounts of crochet thread (19 yards being the most that is needed).
Other materials Needed:1 skein of brown floss for hair Small amount of polyester fiberfill Tapestry needle Washable fabric glue small black bead for Toto's eye.
Boye Steel Crochet hook size 1 (2.25mm). This is a larger size hook than usually used with thread crochet and makes working with thread crochet easier for those who are not comfortable with thread.
Dorothy and Toto of Kansas Bookmark Pattern
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern by LoisLeigh Anderson creates a reading character bookmark featuring Dorothy and Toto from The Wizard of Oz. Designed as part of LoisLeigh's Story Time Bookmark Series, this intermediate-level project brings the beloved Kansas characters to life in miniature form. The pattern includes an optional variation featuring Toto nestled in a basket, offering crafters flexibility in their finished design.
What Is Being Made
The pattern produces a decorative bookmark showcasing Dorothy alongside her faithful companion Toto. Crafters can choose to create the standard design or incorporate the basket option to display Toto. This character-based bookmark combines practical functionality with whimsical storytelling, making it an ideal project for fans of classic literature and adventure tales.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate pattern employs a variety of fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques to build dimension and detail. The stitch work includes:
- Single crochet (sc) – for tight, foundational fabric
- Half double crochet (hdc) – for medium-height stitches
- Double crochet (dc) – for taller, more open fabric sections
- Treble crochet (tr) – for extended height and texture variation
- Slip stitch (sl st) – for joining and finishing
- Front loop and back loop work – for creating textured effects and dimensional details
These combined techniques allow crafters to shape Dorothy's dress, create Toto's form, and add fine details like facial features and accessories.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This pattern uses bedspread weight cotton thread, specifically size 10, which is a fine thread ideal for detailed work and delicate bookmark construction. The thread weight allows for intricate stitch definition and precise shaping of small character elements.
Color and Yardage Requirements:
- Peach (or skin tone of choice) – 13 yards
- Cream (or shirt color of choice) – 12 yards
- Delft blue (or dress, sock, basket, napkin, and eye color of choice) – 23 yards
- Red (or Ruby Slippers color of choice) – 2 yards
- Coppery mist (or basket color of choice) – 4 yards (for Toto in Basket option)
- Black (or Toto color of choice) – 4 yards
- Red (or mouth color of choice) – small amount
- Brown (or hair color of choice) – 1 skein for embroidery floss or thread
The pattern accommodates color customization throughout, allowing crafters to select alternative hues while maintaining the character's recognizable elements. Embroidery floss may be substituted for certain details, particularly for hair and facial features.
Pattern Inclusions
The complete downloadable PDF includes comprehensive abbreviation descriptions and step-by-step instructions to guide crafters through the project. The pattern was designed by LoisLeigh Anderson for Anderson's Creations and published on June 7, 2011, as part of a themed bookmark collection celebrating Kansas and classic literature.
