DNA Knit Sweater by Yarn-Madness
What is Being Made
The DNA sweater is a knitted children's garment designed by independent designer Yarn-Madness. This downloadable knitting pattern provides instructions for creating a fitted sweater available in multiple sizes ranging from newborn (3 months) through 10 years old. The sweater features a yoke construction with decorative stitch patterning, making it suitable for babies, toddlers, and young children.

The DNA pattern includes the following size options with corresponding chest measurements:
- 3 months: 17 inches (43 cm)
- 6 months: 18 inches (45 cm)
- 12 months: 19 inches (48 cm)
- 24 months: 21 inches (52 cm)
- 4 years: 24 inches (60 cm)
- 6 years: 25 inches (63 cm)
- 8 years: 27 inches (67 cm)
- 10 years: 29 inches (72 cm)
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level pattern employs several key knitting techniques. The sweater is worked in the round using circular needles, which creates seamless construction. Knitters have the option to work sleeves using the magic loop method or with double-pointed needles, offering flexibility based on personal preference. The pattern features yoke shaping, a popular construction method where increases are strategically placed to create the upper body fit. The design incorporates colorwork or stitch pattern work as indicated by the twist chart instructions, adding visual interest to the finished garment.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern Details
The DNA sweater utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined into a decorative pattern sequence. The pattern includes:
- Knit through the back loop (k1tbl): Creates twisted stitches that add definition to pattern edges
- Purl (p): Used to create textural contrast and pattern definition
- Make one purl (m1p): An increase stitch that maintains the purl column aesthetic
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease for balanced shaping
- Stockinette stitch: The primary background stitch used throughout the garment
The written twist chart provides row-by-row instructions for the decorative pattern repeat, with specific stitch sequences that create the DNA design element across the yoke and body sections.
Gauge and Sizing Considerations
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 4.5 stitches and 5.5 rows per inch in stockinette stitch. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit across all size ranges. Knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches the pattern specifications.
Materials Required
The DNA sweater pattern calls for the following materials:
- Yarn weight: Worsted weight yarn in quantities ranging from 140 to 250 meters (155 to 250 yards) depending on size selected. Larger sizes require up to 675 meters (740 yards) of yarn.
- Needles: Circular needle in 4.5 mm (US size 7), or the appropriate size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Double-pointed needles in the same size are optional for sleeve construction if not using the magic loop technique.
- Notions: Eight stitch markers in different colors are essential for tracking pattern sections: one marker for the beginning of round and yoke increases, three markers for yoke shaping, and four markers for the main pattern repeat.
Pattern Format
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF file, making it accessible for immediate use once purchased. The format includes written instructions with abbreviations and a twist chart for visual reference during knitting.
Difficulty Level
The DNA sweater is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While it uses fundamental stitches, the combination of yoke construction, in-the-round knitting, stitch pattern work, and multiple size options requires solid foundational knitting skills and comfort with pattern reading.
