Product Description
From the moment I saw the first trailer for Catching Fire I fell in love with the Cowl that Katniss is wearing. This is one of my versions inspired by her cowl - the rustic warmth, charm and strength of hers, but made with a few changes to make it a little more wearable (and warm!) for every day.
The original garment worn by Jennifer Lawrence in the movie is not a knitted garment, but rather made by hand weaving. I have a nod to this in my versions with the hand woven braid detail that you will see throughout the body portion of this cowl. This pattern includes instructions for making and placing these braided details. You might be tempted to skip these so you can wear your creation faster, but DON'T. You will be glad you didn't!
The finishing process is just as important to me as the knitting, and I have also included the tips I have for making the finishing of your garment just as lovely as the knitting!
This pattern also includes tips to customize the size of your finished piece.
District 12 Cowl by Dahlia in Bloom
Project Overview
The District 12 Cowl is a knitted wrap-style cowl designed by Dahlia in Bloom, inspired by the District 12 aesthetic. This intermediate-level knitting project combines a structured cowl with a draped wrap component, creating a versatile accessory suitable for a range of wearers. Unlike more fitted cowl designs, the District 12 Cowl prioritizes coverage and comfort while offering creative opportunities for customization through woven braid embellishments.
Construction and Design Features
The District 12 Cowl employs a two-piece construction method that distinguishes it from traditional single-piece cowl patterns. The wrap body is knit as two separate pieces before being joined together, a technique that allows for extended arm coverage and creates a lower-draping silhouette. This modular approach provides an ideal foundation for adding decorative woven braids throughout the garment.
The cowl portion features a wider profile and lower finished edge compared to similar designs, and can also be embellished with woven braids according to maker preference. The combination of the draped wrap body and the generously proportioned cowl creates a rustic, textured aesthetic while maintaining practical wearability.
Yarn and Materials
This project is worked in super chunky weight yarn, which contributes to quick knitting progress and substantial fabric drape. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF format for immediate access.
Techniques and Construction Methods
- Two-piece construction: Body pieces are knit separately and then joined before working the cowl section
- Woven braid embellishment: Optional decorative braids can be woven throughout both the wrap body and cowl portion for customization
- Finishing techniques: The pattern includes specific finishing instructions to address natural fabric behavior, such as edge curling at the bottom border
Skill Level and Pattern Notes
Rated as an intermediate difficulty project, the District 12 Cowl requires foundational knitting knowledge and comfort with multi-piece garment assembly. The pattern recommends reading through all instructions before beginning to knit. Notably, the bottom edge border will naturally curl during wear and blocking; this is intentional design and requires no corrective action.
