Product Description
For the fourth pattern in my Dip-Dyed CAL, I am sharing the Dip-Dyed Shoulder Bag! My goal was the type that hangs cross body, and falls at the natural waist. The fun texture is created by working into the back loops. I created a front pocket to hold my cell phone, closed with snap buttons, and added a zipper along the top. This pattern can now be viewed on the EyeLoveKnots blog for free, but there is no printer friendly option.
Materials: About 600 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn - I used Lily Sugar n Cream, H8/5mm Crochet Hook, Tapestry Needle, Sewing Needle & Thread or Sewing Machine, 12" Zipper, 2 4 5/8" Snap Buttons, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes: Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.
Time Spent: Just under 5 hours.
Abbreviations: BLO - Back Loop Only, FLO - Front Loop Only, SC - Single Crochet, FSC - Foundation Single Crochet
Dip-Dyed Shoulder Bag Crochet Pattern
What is Being Made
The Dip-Dyed Shoulder Bag is a crossbody shoulder bag designed to hang from the shoulder with the purse falling naturally at the hip. This intermediate-level crochet project features a functional design with practical storage solutions, including a front pocket for cell phones and a zippered top closure. The bag combines style with everyday usability, making it suitable for both casual and practical wear.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This pattern employs a distinctive texture technique by working into the back loops of stitches, which creates visual interest and depth throughout the bag's body. The construction method allows for a structured yet flexible garment that maintains its shape while remaining comfortable to wear. The designer incorporated thoughtful details such as a dedicated front pocket with snap button closure for secure phone storage, and a zippered top opening for secure item containment.
Stitches Used
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the available pattern information, the back loop working technique is the signature stitch method that creates the bag's textured appearance. This technique is a fundamental crochet approach that adds dimension and visual texture to the finished piece.
