Product Description

Have you ever seen a pattern or set of colors that makes you think: I want to knit that? Well, that's exactly what happened to me when I saw my 3-month-old son's Dino Jammies. They were these wonderful shades of gold, blue, and grey and I thought: I want that in a hat. So I pulled out some of my favorite colors from BSF Woolstok, added a dash of texture, a few stripes, and a bright pompom on top and voila! The Dino Jammies hat was born. Of course, my daughter immediately stole it as she does with all my hats, so I decided to size it out for the whole family. I hope you enjoy this quick and fun knit as much as I have!

Dino Jammies Knit Hat by Megan Gonzalez

What is Being Made

Dino Jammies is a downloadable knitting pattern for a playful children's hat designed by Megan Gonzalez. This beginner-friendly project creates a fitted hat available in three sizes: Child (unstretched circumference 16"/40.5 cm, height 7.25"/18.5 cm), Teen/Adult Small (17.75"/45 cm circumference, 8.75"/22 cm height), and Adult Large (19"/48.5 cm circumference, 9"/23 cm height). The hat features colorwork design work, making it an engaging project for knitters new to working with multiple yarn colors.

Knitting Techniques and Methods

This pattern employs in-the-round knitting, a fundamental technique for creating seamless, tubular garments. The pattern utilizes Magic Loop or double-pointed needles (DPNs) for the small circumference sections, which is the preferred method for knitting small circular projects. Knitters begin with circular needles and transition to smaller needles as the circumference decreases toward the crown. The pattern incorporates colorwork knitting, allowing crafters to work with multiple yarn colors in a single row to create the decorative design elements characteristic of the Dino Jammies theme.

Stitches Used

The Dino Jammies pattern uses essential knitting stitches suitable for beginner knitters:

  • Knit stitch (k) – the primary stitch forming the fabric base
  • Purl stitch (p) – used for textural variation and ribbing elements

These fundamental stitches are combined with color changes to create the patterned design. The pattern also incorporates marker placement (pm) to track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the knitting process.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Dino Jammies pattern calls for worsted weight yarn in three colors: main color (MC), contrast color 1 (CC1), and contrast color 2 (CC2). Yardage requirements vary by size, with the Child size requiring 75 yards of main color, 35 yards of contrast color 1, and 40 yards of contrast color 2. The Teen/Adult Small uses 95, 45, and 45 yards respectively, while the Adult Large requires 100, 50, and 55 yards. The pattern suggests Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok, a yarn crafted from 100% Fine Highland Wool, with specific color recommendations: October Sky for the main color, Grey Harbor for the first contrast color, and Spun Gold for the second contrast color.

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires two sets of circular needles: US 5/3.75 mm needles in 16"/40 cm length for the ribbed cuff and initial body, and US 6/4.00 mm needles in 16"/40 cm length for the main body shaping. For the crown decreases on small circumference, knitters use US 6/4.00 mm Magic Loop needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs), with Magic Loop being the designer's preferred method. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and an optional pompom maker for adding a decorative pompom finish to the hat crown.

Gauge

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 26 stitches and 36 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch using the larger needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the hat fits correctly across all three size options.
