What is Being Made

The Dice Bag Collection is a set of four downloadable knitting patterns designed for tabletop gamers and hobbyists who need functional storage for dice, tokens, and other small items. Each pattern produces a quick-to-knit drawstring bag that uses minimal yardage, making these projects ideal for stash busting and gift giving. The collection includes variations in size and construction method, with at least one large dice bag pattern featured in the collection.

Techniques Used

These patterns employ fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The primary construction method uses magic loop technique or double pointed needles (DPN) for working in the round, which is essential for creating seamless cylindrical bag bodies. The patterns incorporate basic shaping and finishing techniques including yarn overs for decorative elements or eyelet details, and knit two together (K2TOG) decreases for shaping the bag structure. Finishing involves sewing in ends with a tapestry needle to complete the project.

Stitches Used

The Dice Bag Collection utilizes fundamental knitting stitches that are accessible to beginner-level knitters. The primary stitch pattern is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric suitable for functional bags. The patterns also incorporate:

  • Knit stitches (K) – the foundation of the stockinette fabric
  • Purl stitches (P) – used in combination with knit stitches to create stockinette when working in the round
  • Yarn overs (YO) – likely used for decorative eyelet details or drawstring channels
  • Knit two together (K2TOG) – decrease stitches for shaping the bag body and creating the proper fit

Materials and Specifications

The Dice Bag Collection is designed to work with Worsted weight yarn, though the patterns accommodate multiple yarn weights including DK, Aran, and Heavy Worsted options for customization. Each bag requires only 60-70 yards of yarn, depending on which pattern variation you choose, making this an economical project that works well for using leftover yarn from larger projects.

Needles required are Size 3.75mm (US 5) double pointed needles or a 32-inch (or longer) 3.75mm (US 5) circular needle for working magic loop. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and at least one stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds.

The recommended gauge is approximately 24 stitches and 32 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch. However, the patterns note that exact gauge is not critical for these functional bags. Knitters can adjust needle size based on desired fabric characteristics: going down a needle size creates a stiffer, more structured bag that stands upright on its own, while going up a needle size produces a looser, more flexible fabric with a slightly larger finished size.

Difficulty Level

These patterns are rated as beginner level, making them accessible to knitters new to circular needle techniques and in-the-round construction. The straightforward stitch combinations and quick completion time make this collection an excellent introduction to working with double pointed needles or magic loop methods.
