Diamonds for Flora Shawl by Veronika Cromwell
What is Being Made
The Diamonds for Flora Shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl designed by Veronika Cromwell. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a finished shawl measuring 150 cm long by 80 cm at its widest point, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping. The shawl features a diamond motif throughout its design and is worked from the point upward toward the wider edge, allowing for customizable sizing by adjusting the number of pattern repeats.
Techniques Used
The Diamonds for Flora Shawl employs fundamental crochet techniques appropriate for beginner-level crafters. The shawl is constructed using a directional approach, beginning at the center point and expanding outward as rows progress. The pattern utilizes chain spaces and stacked stitches to create the diamond pattern detail. Blocking is incorporated as a finishing technique to achieve the final dimensions and shape, requiring blocking mats for proper finishing.
Stitches Used
This pattern uses a limited selection of core crochet stitches, making it accessible for beginners:
- Chain (ch) – the foundation stitch used throughout the pattern
- Treble crochet (tr) – a mid-height stitch that forms the primary structure
- Double treble crochet (dtr) – a taller stitch for added texture
- Double crochet (dc) – a shorter stitch used for shaping
- V-stitch (V st) – a decorative stitch defined as (2 tr, 2 ch, 2 tr) worked into the same stitch, which creates the diamond pattern motif
- Chain spaces (ch-sp) – gaps created by chain stitches that add openwork and lace-like qualities
The pattern consists of a 4-row repeat that is worked consistently throughout the shawl construction. The tension specification of 4 V-stitches by 7 rows measuring 10 cm ensures proper sizing and drape.
Materials and Tools
The Diamonds for Flora Shawl requires minimal materials, making it an economical project. One skein of 4-ply yarn with a yardage of 425 meters per 100 grams is sufficient to complete the entire shawl. A 5 mm crochet hook is used throughout the pattern. Additional tools needed include a yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors for cutting yarn, and blocking mats for finishing and shaping the completed shawl. The pattern uses UK crochet terms, so crocheters should ensure familiarity with this terminology before beginning.
