Diamond Patterned Sweater – Jumper Knitting Pattern for Women in Debbie Bliss British Wool Aran

This pattern by Debbie Bliss delivers a beautifully textured women's pullover sweater worked in Debbie Bliss British Wool Aran yarn. The centrepiece of the design is a striking diamond cable motif that travels across the fabric, giving the finished garment a classic, heritage-inspired look that is both timeless and wearable. The pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty, making it an excellent project for knitters who are comfortable with basic shaping and are ready to explore more structured stitch work such as cables and twist stitches.

What Is Being Made

The finished project is a women's diamond-patterned sweater (jumper) with set-in or drop sleeves and a seamed construction. It is available in seven sizes, fitting chest measurements ranging from 76–81 cm (30–32 in) up to 137–142 cm (54–56 in). Finished chest measurements span from 120 cm (47¼ in) to 176 cm (69¼ in), offering generous ease across the size range. Length to shoulder ranges from 60 cm (23¾ in) to 88 cm (34¾ in) depending on size, and the sleeve seam measures approximately 41–42 cm (16–16½ in) across all sizes.

Construction and Techniques

The sweater is worked flat in separate pieces — front, back, and sleeves — which are then seamed together to create the finished garment. This traditional construction method produces neat, stable seams and allows each section to be blocked individually before assembly. Knitters using a circular needle are instructed to work backwards and forwards in rows rather than in the round, so a long circular needle of at least 80 cm / 32 in is a practical alternative to straight needles.

The defining technique of this pattern is cabling, which creates the signature diamond motifs. Cables are formed by temporarily placing stitches onto a cable needle and holding them either at the back or front of the work before knitting them, crossing groups of stitches over one another to build up the three-dimensional diamond shapes. Specifically, the pattern uses:

  • C6B – slip next 3 stitches onto a cable needle and leave at back of work, knit 3, then knit the stitches from the cable needle; creates a right-leaning cable cross
  • C6F – slip next 3 stitches onto a cable needle and leave at front of work, knit 3, then knit the stitches from the cable needle; creates a left-leaning cable cross
  • Tw2R – a two-stitch right twist worked by knitting into the front of the second stitch, then the front of the first stitch, before slipping both off the needle together
  • Tw2L – a two-stitch left twist worked by knitting into the back of the second stitch, then the front of the first stitch, before slipping both off the needle together

These twist and cable combinations work together to trace the diamond outlines across the fabric. The background texture is reverse stocking stitch (rev st st), which places the purl side of the fabric as the right side, creating a soft, matte ground that allows the raised cable diamonds to stand out in sharp relief. Shaping is achieved through standard increases (including the make one method, picking up and working into the back of the loop between stitches) and decreases (including skpo — slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over — and knitting stitches together).

Stitches Used

  • Reverse stocking stitch – the primary background fabric, giving a textured, purl-face surface
  • Stocking stitch – used within cable sections and potentially for finishing details
  • Six-stitch cables (C6B and C6F) – the main structural element of the diamond pattern
  • Two-stitch twists (Tw2R and Tw2L) – used to outline and define the diamond
