Product Description
I love this stitch, it’s really easy once you’ve got into the rhythm of it and it’s much quicker to do than you might think from the fact it is all dc stitches (US – sc stitches) and chains. I made this version in one evening. I’ve been looking for the perfect yarn for the job, and I think this is it because it shades so beautifully. However, I’ve put in how to do it with a thinner yarn, and you could change colours to make stripes, or just have the diagonals as a texture. One ball of this makes a short, thick scarf, perfect to tuck in the top of a coat – get two balls if you want a wide or long one! If you make it wider, the colour stripes will be narrower, though.
Diagonal Scarf by Elise Mann
What Is Being Made
The Diagonal Scarf is a beginner-friendly crochet project designed to create a short, thick scarf perfect for tucking into the top of a coat. One ball of chunky yarn produces a compact scarf, while two balls allow for a wider or longer finished piece. The design features a distinctive diagonal texture created through strategic increases and decreases that shape the scarf while building visual interest.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental shaping techniques accessible to beginners. The scarf construction follows a logical progression: both sides are increased at the beginning to establish width, one side continues increasing while the opposite side decreases during the main section to create the diagonal effect, and both sides are decreased at the finish to taper the scarf. These directional increases and decreases work together to produce the signature diagonal appearance without requiring advanced crochet skills.
Stitches Used
The Diagonal Scarf is constructed entirely using double crochet stitches (abbreviated as dc in UK crochet terminology, or sc in US crochet terminology) combined with chain stitches. The stitch pattern is referred to as diagonal moss stitch, sometimes called seed stitch. Despite using only these basic stitches, the combination creates a rhythmic, textured appearance that becomes intuitive once the crocheter settles into the pattern's flow.
Materials and Yarn
This pattern is designed for chunky weight yarn, which contributes to the scarf's quick construction time—the designer completed one version in a single evening. The chunky yarn weight also creates the desired thick, substantial finished scarf suitable for winter wear. The pattern accommodates yarn flexibility: while the designer used a variegated yarn that shades beautifully to enhance the diagonal effect, thinner yarn weights can be substituted if desired. Crafters may also experiment with color changes to introduce stripes or emphasize the diagonal texture through solid colors. The pattern specifies UK crochet terminology and includes guidance for adapting yarn choices to personal preference.
Design Versatility
The Diagonal Scarf pattern offers multiple customization options. Adjusting width changes the proportion of color stripes if using variegated yarn. Solid yarn creates a textured appearance where the diagonals read as dimensional rather than chromatic. Color changes between rows allow crafters to introduce striping while maintaining the diagonal stitch structure. These variations make the pattern adaptable to different yarn stashes and personal aesthetic preferences.
