Design 002: Alpine Scarf by Veronica Bailey
What Is Being Made
The Alpine Scarf is a beginner-friendly crochet scarf designed by Veronica Bailey. This finished piece measures 8 inches wide by 56 inches long, plus fringe, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various styling occasions. The scarf's rectangular dimensions and moderate length provide excellent drape and coverage.
Craft and Primary Technique
This design uses crochet as the sole construction method. The Alpine Scarf is classified as an EASY
Stitches Used
The Alpine Scarf incorporates three primary crochet stitches:
- Single Crochet (sc): Used in alternating rows to create a dense, structured fabric base
- Double Crochet (dc): Employed in textured rows to add visual interest and variation in fabric height
- Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Applied strategically in rows 4 and 6 to create a dimensional, ribbed texture by working around stitches from two rows below, adding depth and visual appeal to the finished scarf
- Chain (ch): Used for foundation and turning chains throughout the pattern
The pattern begins with a foundation chain of 27 stitches (or foundation single crochet of 26 stitches), then alternates between single crochet rows and textured double crochet rows with front post stitches. Rows 3 through 6 repeat continuously for rows 7 through 166, creating consistent patterning across the entire length of the scarf.
Materials and Tools
The Alpine Scarf pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended finished dimensions and drape:
- Yarn: Two skeins of Lion Brand Ferris Wheel in the Cherry on Top colorway. This yarn is 100% acrylic, offering durability and easy care. Each skein provides 270 yards (247 meters) and weighs 3 ounces (85 grams). The yarn is classified as weight 4 (Medium), a versatile weight suitable for scarves and garments
- Hook: US J / 6.00 mm crochet hook (Clover brand recommended)
- Additional Tools: Scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and attaching fringe
Gauge and Sizing
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies 12 single crochet stitches = 4 inches and 14 rows = 4 inches. Checking gauge before beginning ensures your completed scarf will measure the intended 8 inches wide by 56 inches long plus fringe. Working with worsted weight yarn and a US J hook naturally produces this gauge when using consistent tension.
Pattern Structure and Progression
The Alpine Scarf follows a logical, repeating pattern structure ideal for beginners. After the initial foundation chain and first row of single crochet, the pattern establishes a four-row repeat (rows 3–6) that continues for the majority of the project. This repetitive structure allows crafters to develop muscle memory and maintain consistent tension throughout the lengthy scarf construction. The alternation between simple single crochet rows and textured rows featuring front post double crochet creates visual interest without requiring complex techniques.
