Product Description

The Desert Cliffs Cardigan is an homage to one of my favorite places, the Jemez Mountains in New Mexico. It is as bright and colorful as the Southwestern desert. It is worked top down in mostly just two colors held together. It features optional waist shaping. The wonderful Ultra Wool from Berroco is soft, easy to work with and machine washable!

Desert Cliffs Cardigan by Isle of Yarn Knitwear Design

What is Being Made

The Desert Cliffs Cardigan is a colorwork knitting pattern designed by Darby Photos for Isle of Yarn Knitwear Design. This cardigan features a striking multi-color intarsia or stranded colorwork design inspired by desert landscape aesthetics, incorporating warm earth tones and natural hues. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is suitable for knitters with intermediate-level skills.

Yarn Materials

This cardigan is knitted using Berroco Ultra Wool, a 100% superwash wool yarn that provides durability and easy care for the finished garment. The pattern calls for five coordinated colors:

  • Yellow (Delicata, color #3325): The primary color, ranging from 7.9 to 13.3 ounces depending on size, providing approximately 495 to 833 yards
  • Orange (Bittersweet, color #3328): An accent color used for colorwork details, requiring 0.73 to 1.2 ounces and 45 to 76 yards
  • Red (Kabocha, color #3327): A secondary accent color with the same yardage requirements as the orange, adding depth to the desert-inspired palette
  • Green (Marjoram, color #33118): A tertiary accent color ranging from 0.86 to 1.5 ounces and 55 to 92 yards across sizes
  • White (Snow, color #3300): A neutral highlight color used sparingly for contrast, requiring 0.41 to 0.69 ounces

Yarn Weight and Needle Requirements

The Desert Cliffs Cardigan is designed to work with aran and worsted weight yarns, which are medium-weight options ideal for creating fabric with good drape and structure. The pattern accommodates multiple sizes with graduated yardage amounts, allowing knitters to select the appropriate quantity based on their desired finished dimensions.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

As an intermediate-level cardigan pattern, the Desert Cliffs design employs colorwork knitting techniques to create its distinctive landscape-inspired aesthetic. The multi-color construction likely utilizes stranded colorwork or intarsia methods, both of which require managing multiple yarn colors throughout the knitting process. Stranded colorwork involves carrying unused colors across the back of the work, while intarsia uses separate yarn bobbins for distinct color sections, allowing for larger blocks of solid color without excessive yarn floats.

The pattern incorporates standard cardigan construction elements typical of intermediate projects, including shaping for armholes, neckline finishing, and button bands. Knitters working this pattern should be comfortable with reading colorwork charts, managing tension across color changes, and executing fundamental shaping techniques such as increases and decreases to achieve proper fit across the eight available sizes.

Design and Finished Garment

The Desert Cliffs Cardigan showcases a coordinated color palette inspired by natural desert geology, with the warm yellow base complemented by orange, red, and green accent colors that evoke canyon walls and desert vegetation. The white color provides subtle contrast and highlights within the colorwork design. This combination creates a visually striking yet wearable garment suitable for those seeking a statement piece with artistic appeal.
