Delmare Shawl by Tash Goodson

What is Being Made

The Delmare Shawl is an asymmetrical knitted shawl inspired by ocean waves and beach sand. The name "Delmare" means "of the sea," reflecting its coastal aesthetic. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a large triangular shawl with a wingspan of 126 inches (320 centimeters) along the top edge and a width of 21.5 inches (55 centimeters), making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or draping.

Construction and Techniques

The Delmare Shawl is worked sideways, beginning from a tip and expanding outward to its widest point. This construction method allows the shawlette to grow organically from a single point, creating a flowing asymmetrical silhouette. The shawl features a striking zig-zag eyelet lace border that finishes the piece, adding visual interest and texture contrast to the design.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch used throughout most of the Delmare Shawl is garter stitch, a meditative, reversible stitch created by knitting every row. Garter stitch provides a textured, ridged fabric that is both forgiving for intermediate knitters and visually appealing. The shawl combines this foundational garter stitch in two neutral colorways with eyelet lace, a decorative technique that creates small decorative holes in the fabric through yarn-over increases paired with decreases. The eyelet lace border features a distinctive zig-zag pattern that adds sophistication and movement to the finished piece.

Yarn and Materials

The Delmare Shawl pattern calls for yarn in the 3-ply and 4-ply weight categories, suitable for creating delicate, draping fabric. The sample shown uses Indie Belle Gloss, a luxury blend composed of 50% superfine merino wool, 15% mulberry silk, 15% superfine kid mohair, and 20% polyamide. This fiber combination provides softness, sheen, and durability. The pattern requires approximately 2 skeins in "Egyptian Cotton" (Color A) totaling 640 meters or 700 yards, 1 skein in "Castle Rock" (Color B) totaling 265 meters or 290 yards, and 1 skein in "Thunder Night" (Color C) totaling 292 meters or 320 yards. The total yardage needed is approximately 1,197 to 1,310 yards depending on the specific yarn chosen.

Gauge and Specifications

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 20 stitches and 22 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) in garter stitch after blocking. This gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The Delmare Shawl is offered in one size, with the dimensions specified above, and is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to tackle eyelet lace techniques and larger projects.
