What is Being Made
Delani is a versatile, loose-fitting knitted top designed by Angeline Webb of KnitRelief Designs. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a sweater or jumper that can be worn as a standalone garment or layered over other pieces. The design features optional sleeves, making it adaptable to different styling preferences and seasons. Available in nine size options ranging from 36" to 72" finished chest circumference, Delani is designed to be worn with 6 to 10 inches of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.
Techniques and Construction
Delani employs simple, straightforward knitting construction suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The garment is worked primarily using circular needles for the body, with small circumference circular needles or double-pointed needles used for the sleeve sections. The pattern incorporates easy lace stitch work as a primary design element, combined with stockinette stitch sections. This combination of techniques creates visual interest while remaining accessible to knitters with intermediate experience. The use of circular needles for the body allows for seamless, in-the-round construction, which simplifies the building process and reduces finishing work.
Stitches Used
- Lace Pattern: The primary stitch pattern features easy lace work that creates an elegant, openwork design element throughout the garment
- Stockinette Stitch: Used in sections of the sweater for contrast and structure, providing a smooth, classic knit fabric
Yarn and Needles
Delani is designed for DK weight yarn, requiring approximately 747 to 1,601 yards depending on the size selected. The sample garment shown in the pattern was knitted using Berroco Ultra Wool DK, a superwash wool yarn offering easy care and durability. This yarn provides 292 yards per 100 grams.
The pattern calls for two needle sizes to achieve proper gauge in different stitch patterns:
- US 6 (4 mm) circular needles: 32 inches or longer for the body, plus small circumference circular needles or DPNs for sleeves. Used for the lace pattern sections, which should achieve a gauge of 18 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches when blocked
- US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles: 32 inches or longer for the body, plus small circumference circular needles or DPNs for sleeves. Used for stockinette stitch sections, which should achieve a gauge of 20 stitches and 26 rows over 4 inches when blocked
Additional notions required include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and scrap yarn or stitch holders for securing stitches during construction.
