Product Description
This is a pattern for a lace turtleneck scarf. It’s a very famous, very old stitch that has come in and out of favor over the years. It looks much more complicated to knit than it actually is, but it does make you look to be an expert knitter, even if you aren’t quite there yet. If you enjoy both knitting lace, and very feminine accessories, you’ll love making this scarf. The panels allow you to show off your knitting prowess, while the turtleneck section will keep you warm. Nor is it too bulky or heavy, as it’s made with dk weight yarn.
Skill Level: Intermediate - Intermediate + (assuming a basic knowledge of knitting, purling and YO’s)
The sample shown here was knitted with Lorna’s Laces Honor however any dk weight yarn will work for this pattern. You can also use sportweight if you would like it about 6 inches wide. No crochet hooks needed if you don't want to edge the scarf.
Dayflower Turtleneck Scarf by Linda Lehman
Project Overview
The Dayflower Turtleneck Scarf is a knitted wearable accessory that combines elegant lace panels with a functional turtleneck section. Designed by Linda Lehman, this intermediate-level knitting project is ideal for knitters who want to create a feminine, sophisticated scarf that showcases advanced techniques while remaining practical for everyday wear. The finished piece balances visual impact with wearability, offering both aesthetic appeal and warmth without excessive bulk.
What is Being Made
This pattern creates a turtleneck scarf featuring decorative lace panels combined with a fitted neckline section. The design allows knitters to display their technical skills through the lace work while the turtleneck portion provides functional warmth and comfort. The scarf is constructed to be lightweight and elegant, making it suitable as a feminine accessory for various occasions.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Dayflower Turtleneck Scarf employs several key knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters:
- Lace Knitting: The pattern features a famous traditional lace stitch worked in panels. While the lace pattern may appear complex, it is designed to be more approachable than it looks, allowing knitters to develop confidence in lace techniques.
- Yarn Overs (YO): Essential to the lace construction, yarn overs create the openwork and decorative holes characteristic of lace patterns.
- Knit and Purl Stitches: The foundation techniques of knitting form the basis of the pattern, with basic knit (K) and purl (P) stitches creating the structure.
- Slip Stitches: Slip 1 stitch purlwise (Sl1) is used for various construction purposes throughout the pattern.
- Joining Methods: The pattern offers flexibility in finishing, allowing knitters to choose between the Kitchener Stitch (a seamless grafting technique) or the three-needle bind-off for joining the sides.
Materials and Specifications
The Dayflower Turtleneck Scarf is designed for a medium-large size and requires the following materials:
- Yarn: 375 to 550 yards of DK weight yarn. DK (double knit) weight yarn is a lightweight option that prevents the finished scarf from being heavy, ensuring comfort during wear.
- Needles: Size #5 (U.S.) knitting needles are used for the main construction. An additional spare size #5 needle is needed for techniques such as the three-needle bind-off or for holding stitches during assembly.
- Finishing Tools: A tapestry needle or Chibi is recommended for the Kitchener Stitch if knitters choose that joining method over the three-needle bind-off.
- Optional Edging: Size F and G crochet hooks are available for an optional crochet edging, allowing customization of the finished scarf's appearance.
Skill Level and Gauge
This pattern is rated at intermediate difficulty level, assuming knitters have foundational knowledge of basic knitting and purling techniques, as well as familiarity with yarn overs. The gauge is approximately 5 stitches per inch, though the pattern notes that exact gauge is not critical to the project's success, offering some flexibility for individual variations in tension.
Design Features
The Dayflower Turtleneck Scarf combines form and function through its thoughtful construction. The lace panels serve as the visual centerpiece, demonstrating knitting expertise and creating an intricate, feminine aesthetic. The turtleneck section provides practical warmth and structure, making the accessory both beautiful and wearable. The use of DK weight yarn ensures the scarf remains lightweight and comfortable, avoiding the bulk often associated with heavier scarves. This design is particularly suited for knitters who enjoy lace work and want to create a polished, professional-looking accessory.
