Named in honor of Davy Jones & a song that I still can't hear & not sing along and be anything but happy:) This Daydream Believer is a top-down, seamless raglan with a shawlette collar & mini-shawlettes at the cuffs (shawlettes & minis are knit separately & sewn to the garment after blocking). Instructions for a short-sleeved (cuffless) version are included. The button plackets are worked at the same time as the bodice, and you may place as many or as few buttons as you wish on the cardigan (or change your mind after-the-fact). Waist and hip shaping are done along princess "seams" at the fronts and back. Due to the nature of the particular lace pattern, the collar folds above the seam at the back of the neck. I find that the fold actually feels cozy on the neck and also pulls the back neckline inward a bit. If, however, you find that the fold is a bit “floppy” (technical term…), you may wish to sew the fold in place.
The Daydream Believer Cardigan is a women's button-front cardigan sweater that combines traditional cardigan construction with decorative shawlette elements. Inspired by the designer's love of knitting shawls and the practical challenge of wearing them, this design integrates small shawlettes as the collar and cuffs, creating a unique hybrid garment that functions as both a wearable cardigan and a showcase for shawl-inspired details.
This cardigan features top-down seamless construction, allowing knitters to try on the garment as they progress through the pattern. The design is worked primarily in one piece from the neckline downward, which eliminates the need for seaming and provides flexibility for fit adjustments during the knitting process. The button plackets are worked simultaneously with the body of the sweater, streamlining the construction process and ensuring perfectly integrated front closures.
The Daydream Believer Cardigan is designed to be worn with flexible ease options, accommodating anywhere from 1 inch of negative ease to 1 inch of positive ease. This range allows the cardigan to be styled as a fitted or relaxed garment depending on personal preference. The pattern includes detailed guidance in the "A Few Thoughts About Fit" section to help knitters modify the design for their individual fit preferences and body measurements.
This advanced-level pattern employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques. Knitters will work with raglan increases to shape the sleeves and body, princess seam shaping for fitted waist definition, and top-down seamless construction methods. The shawlette elements at the collar and cuffs incorporate shawl-specific stitch patterns and shaping techniques, such as increases that create the characteristic fan or triangular silhouettes typical of shawlette designs. Button bands and plackets are worked using standard stockinette stitch and ribbing techniques.
The Daydream Believer Cardigan is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, a versatile medium weight suitable for creating garments with good drape and structure. Knitters will need appropriate needles for their chosen yarn (typically US 4-7 depending on yarn fiber content and desired gauge), along with buttons for the front closure. The specific yardage requirements and button quantity are detailed within the full pattern.
This pattern is rated as advanced and is best suited for experienced knitters who are comfortable with seamless top-down construction, multiple simultaneous stitch patterns, and fitting adjustments. The combination of raglan shaping, princess seams, integrated button bands, and separate shawlette construction requires strong foundational skills and the ability to read and follow complex pattern instructions.
