Das Waldhaus Cuff Down Socks by Atalante
What is Being Made
Das Waldhaus Cuff Down is an intermediate-level knitted sock pattern inspired by the German fairy tale "Das Waldhaus" (The Hut in the Forest). This cuff-down sock design features three colorways representing the three sisters from the tale, allowing knitters to create a narrative element through color choices. The pattern is available in women's sizing with options for Small, Medium, and Large.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs the magic loop method as the primary construction technique, a popular approach for knitting small circumference projects like socks in the round using a single circular needle. The pattern is structured with Needle 1 working the instep and Needle 2 working the sole, creating a two-needle system. Knitters who prefer traditional methods have the flexibility to adapt the pattern for double-pointed needles (dpns) by dividing stitches across four dpns instead.
The cuff-down construction begins at the cuff and works toward the toe, allowing for easy adjustments and fitting as the sock takes shape. This method is particularly valued for its ability to accommodate custom fit and length adjustments.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The primary stitch used throughout the sock is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic fabric characteristic of traditional sock knitting. The pattern includes cable elements, as indicated by the inclusion of a cable needle in the materials list, adding textural interest and visual complexity to the design.
Materials and Specifications
Needles: US 1½ (2.5mm) circular needles for the magic loop method, plus a cable needle for cable stitch work.
Yarn Requirements: The pattern calls for Regia 4-ply yarn in the main color (MC), requiring 1 skein of approximately 210 meters per 50-gram ball. The yarn composition is 75% wool and 25% polyamide, providing durability and elasticity ideal for sock wear. For the colorwork elements, knitters select 3 different colors of fingering-weight sockyarn, with 20 grams (approximately 85 meters or 92 yards) of each contrast color (CC 1-3).
Gauge: The pattern is worked at a gauge of 36 stitches and 46 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches) measured in stockinette stitch, which is typical for fingering-weight sock yarn and ensures proper fit and fabric hand.
Additional Materials: A tapestry needle is required for weaving in ends and finishing the completed socks.
Design Narrative
The pattern draws inspiration from the classic fairy tale where three sisters are tested by the animals and people they encounter. The youngest sister's kindness and virtue are rewarded, making the three-color construction a meaningful design choice that allows knitters to engage with the story while creating a wearable piece.
