Product Description
This is a pretty and really versatile shawl, collar or wrap - it can be worn in so many different ways that the only limit is your ingenuity. Made in 3 pieces and easily stitched together, the triangular lace back is a wonderful contrast to the stocking stitch side panels, finished with a lace frilled edging. It's not difficult to knit - if you can work yarn forward, K2tog and sl1, K1, psso, plus increasing, you've got all the skills you need.
Knitted in Rowan Lima, this unusual baby alpaca yarn is really soft and gives a lovely drape to the garment. It takes just 4 balls, or approx 350-400m.
And it can be knitted in other aran weight yarns too. Try mohair for winter or a cotton/silk slub yarn for cool summer evenings (note that the finished size may vary if using an alternative yarn). I'm going to add beads to the back lace panel for a really special party shawl.
Darcy Shawl by Anni Howard
What is Being Made
The Darcy is a versatile knitted accessory designed by Anni Howard that functions as a shawl, collar, or wrap. This one-size design offers multiple styling options, making it a practical addition to any wardrobe. The finished piece features lace edging details along both the right and left sides, creating an elegant, decorative finish.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft. The Darcy is classified as an intermediate
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Darcy shawl employs several key knitting techniques:
- Stockinette stitch (st st) – forms the main body of the piece
- Ribbing – used in structured sections for elasticity and definition
- Yarn forward (yfwd) – creates the decorative lace pattern openings
- Increases – achieved by knitting into the front and back of stitches to gradually expand the width
- Lace edging – applied along both right and left edges using picked-up stitches and yarn-forward decreases for an ornamental finish
- Cast on and cast off – standard edge techniques to begin and complete the project
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Darcy shawl is designed to be worked in aran weight yarn. The pattern specifies 4 x 50g balls of Rowan Lima in shade 884, which provides approximately 350–400 meters of yarn. If substituting with a different aran weight yarn, knitters should ensure they have sufficient yardage within this range to complete the project successfully.
The project requires 2 x 5½ mm needles to achieve the correct gauge and fabric drape. The recommended tension is 20 stitches and 26 rows to 10 centimeters (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using 5½ mm needles. Maintaining this tension is essential for the shawl to reach its intended finished size and proportions.
Construction Method
The Darcy is constructed in sections. The right side begins with a small cast-on of 2 stitches, which is increased gradually through yarn-forward techniques until reaching 62 stitches. This creates the main body of the shawl. Once the right side is complete, stitches are picked up along the straight edge to create the right lace edging, which is then worked in a combination of purl and knit stitches with additional yarn-forward lace details. A similar process is used for the left lace edge, allowing the shawl to be built systematically from one section to the next.
