Dance in the Dew Socks by Renate Dziedataja

Project Overview

Dance in the Dew socks is a beginner-friendly knitted sock pattern from the Summer Sock Collection 2020, designed by independent designer Renate Dziedataja. This design draws inspiration from Latvian Midsummer traditions, specifically the cultural belief that bathing naked in morning dew as the sun rises after the solstice night promotes health and beauty. The pattern captures the essence of this cherished Baltic tradition through its thoughtful construction and accessible skill level.

Sizing and Finished Measurements

Dance in the Dew socks are designed for adult feet in two sizes:

  • Adult S: Foot circumference 7.5 inches (19 cm), adjustable foot length 9 inches (23 cm)
  • Adult M: Foot circumference 8 inches (20 cm), adjustable foot length 10 inches (25 cm)

The pattern is written for 60 and 64 stitch counts respectively. If you typically work with different stitch counts, the designer recommends adjusting needle size accordingly—using smaller needles for fewer stitches or larger needles for more stitches—to achieve proper fit and gauge.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This beginner-level sock pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to sock construction. The primary stitch used throughout is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for everyday wear. The socks are worked in the round, a core technique in sock knitting that eliminates the need for seaming and ensures a seamless, comfortable fit around the foot.

The pattern accommodates different circular knitting methods: you may work on double-pointed needles (DPNs) or use the magic loop technique with circular needles, offering flexibility based on your preferred knitting method. The adjustable foot length allows customization to ensure a perfect personal fit.

Materials and Gauge

Yarn: Dance in the Dew socks require fingering weight yarn, the standard choice for sock knitting due to its durability and drape. Approximately 201 yards (184 meters) for Adult S or 230 yards (210 meters) for Adult M are needed, using roughly 46 to 53 grams of yarn depending on size. A full skein of 400 meters in 100 grams provides ample yardage with room to spare.

Needles: US #1 / 2.25mm double-pointed needles or circular needles (for magic loop method) are required to achieve proper gauge. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to meet the specified gauge.

Gauge: The pattern is designed to 32 stitches and 42 rounds per 4 inches (10 centimeters) worked in stockinette stitch on US #1 (2.25mm) needles. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper fit; variations in your personal gauge or yarn characteristics may affect yardage requirements.

Additional Notions

Beyond yarn and needles, you will need stitch markers to track pattern repeats and round beginnings, and a darning needle for weaving in ends and any finishing details. These basic notions are standard supplies in any knitter's toolkit.

Pattern Format

Dance in the Dew socks are provided as a downloadable PDF, making the pattern immediately accessible for digital viewing, printing, or reference on devices while you knit. This format allows you to work through the pattern at your own pace and refer back to instructions as needed.
