One skein of specified yarn used.
Crossed Wires features an intricate mesh of twisted-stitch cables, that crosse over each other as they wend their way down from the cuff to the heel flap. The rest of the sock is knitted in plain stocking stitch, to better highlight all the fun that is happening around the back.
Cabled section is fully charted, and the rest of the pattern is written out.
These socks feature a slip-stitch heel, modified to fit the flow of the pattern, and a slip-stitch toe, for better wear-and-tear resistance.
Crossed Wires Socks by Sockmatician
What is Being Made
Crossed Wires is a beginner-friendly sock knitting pattern designed by Sockmatician. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a pair of socks featuring a distinctive twisted stitch panel that runs down the back of the sock. The design showcases raised twisted stitches that visually resemble wires crossing over one another as they descend toward the heel flap, creating an elegant textural detail on an otherwise simple sock construction.
Design and Construction
The pattern is structured to balance visual interest with accessibility for knitters new to sock construction. The main body of the sock is worked in straightforward stocking stitch, allowing the intricate twisted stitch panel on the back to become the focal point of the design. The designer notes that knitters are welcome to substitute their favorite stitch patterns into the sections worked in stocking stitch, offering flexibility for customization while maintaining the signature crossed wire panel.
Sizes and Customization
Crossed Wires is available in three sizes. The pattern includes separate charts for different sizing options: a combined chart labeled "Large and Medium" accommodates sizes M and L, while a separate chart labeled "Small" is provided for size S. This multi-size approach ensures a proper fit across various foot dimensions.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
- Twisted Stitches: The defining feature of this pattern, twisted stitches create the raised "wires" that cross over one another down the back panel of the sock
- Stocking Stitch: Used for the main body sections, providing a smooth, classic knit fabric that allows the twisted stitch panel to stand out
- Heel Flap Construction: The pattern incorporates a traditional heel flap, with the twisted stitch panel descending toward this structural element
- Chart-Based Patterning: The design utilizes charts to guide knitters through the crossed wire panel, making the pattern easy to follow
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, ideal for creating well-fitted socks with excellent stitch definition. The sample shown was knitted using Casbah Sock from Handmaiden Fine Yarn in the Morgana colorway. This yarn is composed of 80% Merino, 10% Cashmere, and 10% Nylon, offering a luxurious blend that combines the warmth and breathability of merino wool with the softness of cashmere and the durability of nylon. One skein provides 355 yards, sufficient yardage for completing a pair of socks in this pattern.
Needles
The pattern was created using a ChiaoGoo 2mm circular needle, which is the recommended needle size for working with 4-ply sock yarn. Circular needles of this size are ideal for sock knitting, allowing for seamless construction using either the magic loop method or small-circumference circular knitting techniques.
Skill Level
Classified as a beginner pattern, Crossed Wires introduces knitters to sock construction while incorporating a manageable twisted stitch panel. The straightforward stocking stitch body combined with a charted twisted stitch section makes this an accessible entry point into sock knitting, even for those new to the craft.
