Product Description

This fun pattern can be used to create cute Christmas decorations that can be hung on a tree or you could string them together and make some fun birthday bunting. I've also seen them used as gift tags. The pattern uses DK yarn and includes instructions to make 2 different shaped presents with 5 different colour combinations for each present shape.

Each present only uses a little yarn so this is a great pattern for using up your scraps and you can create allsorts of different colour combinations. I have used Paintbox Cotton DK yarn for this pattern but have also made them using other types of DK yarn and they have all turned out great. The pattern is written in UK terms with US equivalents listed in the abbreviations and includes photos to help guide you. It requires a 4mm hook and some natural twine (or spare ribbon or yarn) for hanging.

Happy Making,

What You'll Be Making

These charming crochet present decorations are small festive ornaments designed to embellish holiday displays, gift packages, or seasonal décor. The pattern features multiple present designs in varying shapes and sizes, allowing crafters to create a coordinated collection of miniature wrapped gifts. Each present is constructed using basic crochet techniques and finished with natural twine to resemble decorative bows and ribbon accents.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses crochet as the primary construction method. Crochet is a fiber arts technique that uses a single hook to create interlocking loops of yarn, forming fabric from a series of connected stitches. This method is ideal for small decorative items as it works up quickly and creates a sturdy, dimensional finished piece.

Stitches Used

The pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches suitable for beginners:

  • Chain (ch) – The foundation stitch that creates a series of loops, used to establish the base of each present piece
  • Double Crochet (dc) – Referred to in UK crochet terms; this stitch (equivalent to US single crochet) creates a tight, dense fabric ideal for structured decorative items
  • Slip Stitch (ss) – Used to join rounds or secure yarn, creating seamless transitions between sections

Present Designs

The pattern includes at least one present variation:

  • Present 1 (Wide Rectangle) – A rectangular-shaped present constructed by creating two matching rectangular pieces using chain and double crochet stitches. The body is formed by working rows of double crochet across a foundation chain of 11 stitches, building height through multiple rows.

Materials Required

Yarn: DK weight yarn in either cotton or acrylic fiber. The designer used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in a vibrant palette including Rich Mauve (445), Tea Rose (443), Bubblegum Pink (451), Lime Green (429), Marine Blue (434), Blood Orange (420), Buttercup Yellow (423), Kingfisher Blue (435), Raspberry Pink (444), and Pillar Red (415). Crafters may substitute any DK or light worsted weight yarn in preferred colors, including traditional Christmas color schemes.

Tools and Notions:

  • 4mm crochet hook
  • Natural twine for decorative bows and ribbon details
  • Darning needle for weaving in yarn ends and assembly
  • Craft scissors for trimming yarn

Skill Level

This pattern is classified as beginner difficulty, making it accessible to those new to crochet. The straightforward stitch combinations and simple construction methods allow newcomers to practice fundamental techniques while creating attractive finished pieces.

Pattern Format and Language

The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF document and is written using UK crochet terminology, which differs from US crochet terms in stitch naming conventions.
