Product Description
My second Granny Square designed for Granny Square Day 2020. I called it Lattice Granny Square as its construction reminds a lattice. You can crochet squares many squares and join them to create a design (scarf, poncho, garments, mitts...) or extand it adding more rounds. I included a tutorial showing how you can beautifully join the squares in the pattern. Different yarns and threads can be used, so the yardage and the hook size depend on the chosen yarn.
Crochet Lattice Granny Square Dishcloths by Naturofils
What Is Being Made
The Crochet Lattice Granny Square is a downloadable crochet pattern designed to create decorative dishcloths using a classic granny square construction. This intermediate-level project produces geometric squares featuring an open lattice design with picot details, making them suitable for both functional kitchen use and decorative purposes.
Craft and Technique Overview
This pattern uses fundamental crochet techniques combined with more advanced construction methods to achieve its distinctive lattice appearance. The design employs a multi-round building process where each round adds complexity and visual interest to the square. The lattice effect is created through strategic placement of chains, single crochets, and slip stitches that form open segments and interconnected patterns. The inclusion of picots—small decorative loops—adds a refined, lacy quality to the finished piece.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – Forms the foundation and creates the openwork elements throughout the design
- Single crochet (sc) – Provides structure and fills specific areas within the lattice pattern
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used for joining rounds and creating the lattice segments that define the square's geometric structure
- Picot stitch – A decorative technique combining chain stitches and slip stitches to create small ornamental loops that embellish the edges and interior of the design
- Multi-round construction – The pattern builds across at least three rounds, with each round adding new lattice segments and increasing the overall complexity
Pattern Structure
The pattern follows a systematic round-by-round approach. Round 1 establishes the foundation with picot stitches spaced around the initial chain. Round 2 develops the first lattice segments by combining chains, single crochets, and slip stitches into vertical segments. Round 3 continues building the lattice framework by connecting these segments with additional picots and chains. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and distinguishes between right side (RS) and wrong side (WS) to ensure proper orientation during construction.
Materials and Yarn Weight Flexibility
This pattern accommodates an exceptionally wide range of yarn weights, making it highly versatile for crocheters with different material preferences. Suitable yarn weights include cobweb, lace, thread, sport, dk, 3-ply, 4-ply, worsted, heavy worsted, aran, 6-ply, chunky, and super chunky, as well as varied weight options. This flexibility means the finished dishcloths can range from delicate and lacy (when worked in finer weights) to more substantial and absorbent (in heavier weights). The pattern requires an appropriate crochet hook sized to match the chosen yarn weight, and hook selection will significantly impact the final dimensions and drape of the square.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes crocheters have foundational skills with basic stitches and are comfortable following multi-round instructions with directional changes. The lattice construction and picot details require attention to detail and understanding of how to manipulate the hook and yarn to achieve the intended open-work effect.
