Product Description
This headband design was created when a friend requested a knit headband in off-white. I sent her a photo of all the white and off-white yarn I had in my stash, and she chose Bernat Blanket in Vintage White. I began playing around with the size and design and landed on a simple crisscross style in stockinette stitch.
This pattern includes the following techniques: Cast On, Knit, Purl, Knit front and back, Slip 1 stitch Knit wise, Slip 1 stitch Purl wise, Slip Slip Knit, Knit 2 together.

What Is Being Made
The CrissCross Headband is a knitted accessory designed to wrap around the head with a distinctive criss-cross style. This intermediate-level project creates a cozy, fashionable headband suitable for various occasions and seasons, depending on yarn choice. The pattern was inspired by a custom request for an off-white knit headband and showcases a simple yet elegant design approach.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The headband is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques combined with strategic shaping methods. The criss-cross design is achieved through careful increases and decreases that create the distinctive crossed pattern while maintaining structural integrity. The pattern demonstrates intermediate-level skills, making it accessible to knitters who have mastered basic stitches but are ready to work with shaping techniques.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary stitch pattern, created by alternating knit rows and purl rows to form the smooth, classic fabric base
- Knit Front and Back (KFB) – An increase technique used to add stitches and create the shaping necessary for the criss-cross design
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog) – A right-leaning decrease used to shape the headband
- Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK) – A left-leaning decrease that provides balanced shaping
- Slip Stitches (Sl1K and Sl1P) – Slip 1 stitch knitwise and slip 1 stitch purlwise techniques used for edge finishing and pattern transitions
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The pattern calls for Weight 6 Super Bulky yarn. The pictured example uses Bernat Blanket Yarn in Vintage White, which provides a soft, luxurious texture ideal for a cozy headband. Super bulky yarn allows the project to work up quickly while creating a substantial, warm accessory.
Needles and Tools: US 11/8mm knitting needles are required for this project. Additional tools include a darning needle for finishing, scissors, and a stitch holder (which can be substituted with scrap yarn, a paper clip, or a cable needle). The pattern begins with a cast-on of 4 stitches using any preferred cast-on method, with the long-tail cast-on method recommended by the designer.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 4 inches by 4 inches equals 10 stitches by 13 rows. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating a headband that fits correctly and maintains the intended criss-cross appearance and fabric drape.
