Product Description
Twisting cables undulate and wrap around bobbles in deep shades of cranberry and crimson while reverse stockinette panels highlight the cablework and provide a dappled canvas.
Red tells many stories: this hat was inspired by the gorgeous reds that Elena dyed in the Colour Adventures yarn.
I come from a small family. This yarn reminds me of my new family, my in-laws, and the warmth with which they’ve taken me in. I named it after a family recipe on my husband’s side that was passed down to me. I’ve also modifed it for vegeterian use with my friend Jan’s help. It will make your house smell incredible and free your hands up to knit!
The sample is shown in Colour Adventures yarn. A suggested substitute is shown below.
Cranberry Autumn Knit Hat by Alicia Plummer
What Is Being Made
The Cranberry Autumn is a downloadable knitting pattern for a classic knit hat available in four sizes: Toddler, Child, Teen, and Adult. The hat is designed to fit head circumferences of 16, 17, 18, and 20 inches (40.6, 43, 45.7, and 50.8 centimeters) respectively. The finished hat measures between 16.6 and 22 inches in circumference with heights ranging from 6 to 9 inches, making it a versatile accessory suitable for the entire family.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project uses circular needles to create a seamless, tubular hat construction. The pattern features two different brim options—a ribbed brim and a folded brim—allowing knitters to choose their preferred finishing style. The designer recommends the ribbed brim for children's sizes as it provides a better fit and helps the hat stay securely in place during wear. The hat is worked from the bottom up using the in-the-round method on circular needles.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The Cranberry Autumn is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for a traditional hat silhouette. The gauge is 12 stitches and 13 rows over 2 inches (5 centimeters) in stockinette stitch on the larger needles, ensuring consistent sizing across all four available sizes. The pattern incorporates cable work as indicated by the inclusion of a cable needle in the required notions, adding textural interest and visual depth to the design.
Yarn and Needle Requirements
The Cranberry Autumn is designed for DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that creates a fabric with excellent drape and breathability. Yardage requirements vary by size: the Toddler size requires 125 yards (114 meters), the Child size needs 175 yards (160 meters), the Teen size uses 225 yards (205 meters), and the Adult size requires 250 yards (229 meters). The pattern suggests Sweet Merino DK by Colour Adventures as the ideal yarn choice.
Two sizes of circular needles are required for this project:
- US Size #4/3.5 mm circular needles for the ribbed or folded brim
- US Size #6/4 mm circular needles for the main body of the hat
Additional Notions and Tools
Beyond needles and yarn, the Cranberry Autumn pattern requires the following notions and tools for completion:
- A cable needle for working cable stitches
- A darning needle or crochet hook for weaving in yarn ends
- Stitch markers in two colors: four to six markers in color A for general stitch marking, and one BOR (Beginning of Round) marker in color B to clearly identify the start of each round
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Cranberry Autumn is suitable for knitters with some experience. While the stockinette stitch base is accessible to many knitters, the inclusion of cable work and the requirement to work seamlessly in the round on circular needles makes this pattern appropriate for those who have completed several basic projects and are comfortable with fundamental knitting techniques.
