Product Description
Introducing my Courgette knitting pattern. Courgettes are a summer squash, also known as zucchini. Botanically they are a fruit, but in cooking and nutrition they are treated as a vegetable. Knitted veggies are super toys to encourage little ones to eat veg and greens, or you can use them as decorative items in your home. My veggies are worked flat, but most pieces could easily be converted to knitting in the round if that is your preference. You will also need to cast on and off, knit, purl, work increases and decreases, and sew a seam.
Courgette Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
The Courgette is a small knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry that recreates a summer squash (also known as zucchini) in miniature form. This finished toy stands 18cm tall and is suitable for beginners learning fundamental knitting techniques. The project combines two-color knitting to achieve the characteristic elongated shape and natural coloring of a courgette.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting pattern designed for knitters of all skill levels, particularly beginners. The pattern employs basic knitting construction methods combined with simple color work to create dimension and visual interest. The toy is constructed using straightforward shaping techniques that allow new knitters to practice essential skills while creating a finished, three-dimensional object.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for beginner crafters:
- Knit (k) - the primary stitch forming the fabric base
- Knit front and back (kfb) - an increase stitch used to shape the courgette's form
These essential stitches are combined to build the toy's structure and create the necessary shaping for an authentic courgette silhouette.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK, a 100% acrylic yarn in double knitting (DK) or light worsted weight. Two colorways are required:
- Dark Green - shade "Bottle Green"
- Light Green - shade "Grass"
Less than 25 grams of each color is needed, making this an economical project perfect for using yarn scraps. The recommended tension is 6 stitches by 8 rows per 2.5cm square, which helps ensure proper sizing of the finished toy.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires a pair of straight 2.75mm (US 2) knitting needles with a minimum length of 20cm. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for seaming the pieces together, toy filling to stuff the courgette and give it dimension, and two 9mm toy safety eyes to complete the finished character.
