Product Description
This shawl pattern is a modified summer shawl that I made years ago, before I learned the importance of making notes on what I knit. A Tucson knitter had asked for the pattern. As usual after 8 years the yarn was no longer available, I am not even sure if that Indy yarn company is still in business. So this is my current interruption of that summer shawl.
Count 1-2-3-4: A Broken Rib Shawl by Sheri Karobonik
What is Being Made
Count 1-2-3-4 is a modified summer shawl pattern designed by independent knitting designer Sheri Karobonik. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a beginner-friendly approach to shawl knitting, featuring a broken rib construction that creates an elegant, draped garment suitable for warm weather wear.
Design and Construction
The shawl employs a broken rib stitch pattern that balances simplicity with visual interest. Despite the straightforward nature of the pattern, Sheri Karobonik emphasizes the importance of careful counting throughout the knitting process to maintain stitch accuracy. The designer notes that this pattern was refined through multiple iterations, demonstrating the value of methodical attention to detail even when working with basic stitch patterns.
Knitting Techniques
This shawl pattern is designed for knitters of all skill levels, particularly beginners seeking to expand their repertoire. The pattern can be worked in various settings and environments, making it an ideal portable project. Key technique considerations include maintaining consistent tension and carefully tracking stitch counts to avoid the need for frogging (unraveling and reknitting).
Stitches Used
- Broken Rib: The primary stitch pattern that forms the structural and aesthetic foundation of the shawl
Materials and Yarn Weight
The pattern is written for fingering weight yarn, with the original design utilizing Dream in Color Jilly with Cashmere 440, a premium blend composed of 70% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Cashmere, and 10% Nylon. This specific yarn composition provides superior drape and luxurious feel. Knitters may substitute other fingering weight yarns, though alternative choices may not achieve the same level of drape as the recommended yarn.
The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weights within the fingering to sport weight range, including 3-ply, 4-ply, lace, and sport weight options, offering flexibility for yarn selection based on availability and personal preference.
Needles and Tools
US size 11 needles are specified for this pattern. Knitters with tighter tension may need to adjust needle size accordingly to achieve proper gauge and fabric drape.
