Coral Basket by Lizzie Rose Knits

Project Overview

The Coral Basket is a beginner-friendly crochet container project designed by Lizzie Rose Knits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a decorative and functional basket suitable for storage or display purposes. The project is ideal for crafters new to crochet who want to practice fundamental techniques while creating a practical finished item.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a crocheted basket with a structured, expandable form. The basket features a circular base that gradually increases in width to create bowl-like sides, making it suitable for holding small items, yarn, or decorative objects. The finished piece combines a solid body with decorative shell stitch detailing near the top edge.

Crochet Techniques Used

  • Magic Ring (Magic Circle) – The pattern begins with this foundational technique, which creates a tight center point for circular projects without a visible hole in the middle.
  • Increases – Multiple rounds of strategic increases are worked to expand the basket from 6 stitches to 102 stitches over 18 rounds, creating the bowl shape.
  • Back Loop Only (BLO) Stitching – One complete round is worked through back loops only, creating a textured ridge that adds visual interest and structure.
  • Shell Stitch – Decorative shell stitches (5 double crochets in one stitch) are incorporated into the pattern, typically near the basket's upper edge for an ornamental finish.
  • Stitch Marker Placement – Locking stitch markers are used throughout to track the beginning of each round, essential for maintaining pattern accuracy in circular crochet.

Stitches Used

  • Single Crochet (sc) – The primary stitch used throughout most of the pattern, providing a tight, dense fabric ideal for a sturdy basket structure.
  • Double Crochet (dc) – Used in the shell stitch detail sections to create height variation and decorative texture.

Materials Required

Yarn: Approximately 180–190 yards of Lion Brand ZZ Twist in the Coral colorway. This worsted weight yarn (246 yards per 100g ball) provides excellent stitch definition and durability for a functional container.

Tools: One 5mm (H) size crochet hook, which is the standard hook size for worsted weight yarn and ensures proper gauge and fabric density.

Notions: Scissors for cutting yarn, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and locking stitch markers for tracking round progression.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner, making it accessible to crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle their first structured project. The magic ring technique and systematic increases provide gentle introduction to shaping, while the straightforward stitch sequence builds confidence and consistency.

Pattern Structure

The Coral Basket follows a logical progression: it begins with a magic ring foundation, expands through 18 rounds of increasing single crochet stitches to establish the basket's base and sides, incorporates a textured back-loop-only round for visual definition, and concludes with decorative shell stitch embellishments. The pattern uses clear abbreviations and repeating sequences that reinforce fundamental crochet skills.
