Product Description
I love how the Coop beanie fits your head snugly due to the super elastic nature of the cable pattern, which flows neatly into the decreases ensuring a perfect fit. It took a bit of tinkering to find a way to decrease the stitches in such a way that it wouldn't detract from the chicken mesh appearance of the Coop cable, but I think you will agree the result is stunning!
Available in three sizes to fit everyone from a small to large adult, the small fits most children from 4 - 13 years of age, use the measurements provided to calculate the best size to knit.
This pattern is available with coordinating cowl, mitts and bonus patterns in the e-book "Coop set", or you can purchase the patterns separately

Coop Beanie by JustJussi
What is Being Made
The Coop Beanie is an adult-sized knitted winter hat designed by Justine Turner. This downloadable knitting pattern is available in three finished head circumference sizes: small (50 cm / 20"), medium (55 cm / 22"), and large (60 cm / 24"). The beanie provides a snug, warm fit ideal for cold weather wear.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project incorporates several fundamental and decorative techniques. The pattern employs cable stitches, which are created using a cable needle to cross stitches over one another for textured, dimensional effects. The design also uses increases and decreases to shape the hat, allowing the knitter to expand and contract the fabric as needed for proper fit and shaping.
Stitches and Stitch Abbreviations
The Coop Beanie pattern uses the following stitches and abbreviations:
- k - knit stitch, the fundamental stitch in knitting
- k2tog - knit two stitches together, a common decrease that reduces stitch count by one
- kfb (also written as kbf) - knit into the front loop of a stitch, then knit into the back loop without dropping the original stitch from the left needle, creating an increase of one stitch
- LC - left cross cable, created by slipping a stitch onto a cable needle, holding it at the front of the work, and crossing it over subsequent stitches for a twisted, braided appearance
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Coop Beanie pattern calls for DK weight yarn, specifically White Gum Wools ethical merino in 100% merino wool. Yardage requirements vary by size: the small size requires 110 meters (121 yards), the medium size requires 120 meters (132 yards), and the large size requires 150 meters (165 yards). Each skein of White Gum Wools merino DK contains 100 grams and 236 meters of yarn. While the pattern does not explicitly specify needle size in the provided content, DK weight yarn typically pairs with US sizes 4-6 (3.5-4mm) needles, and the pattern references a cable needle for executing the cable stitches.
Pattern Details
This is an original knitwear design by Justine Turner, released in 2014 under the reference number JJ1060. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF format, making it accessible for knitters to work from digitally or print for reference. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should have foundational knitting skills and comfort with techniques such as cable work and shaping before beginning this project.
