What is Being Made
Convergent Mitts are a pair of knitted fingerless mitts designed by Jordan Prouty. These mitts feature a distinctive stitch pattern inspired by the designer's Convergent socks. The pattern offers four size options with finished circumferences of 5", 6", 6.75", and 7.5" (13, 15, 17, and 19 cm respectively), making them easily customizable for different arm and hand lengths. The mitts are knit from the cuff upward, allowing crafters to adjust the length to their personal preferences.
Techniques Used
Convergent Mitts are constructed using small circumference knitting techniques, which is the preferred method for creating seamless tubular garments like mitts and socks. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. The pattern requires working in the round, and crafters can use their preferred method for small circumference knitting, whether that involves double-pointed needles, circular needles, or other specialized tools designed for this purpose.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern featured in these mitts is the Convergent rib pattern. This stitch pattern is worked over a 4-inch (10 cm) gauge of 38 stitches and 42 rows. The pattern also incorporates basic knitting abbreviations including knit (k), knit 2 together (k2tog) for decreasing, cast on (CO), and bind off (BO) techniques. The Convergent rib creates a beautiful, textured fabric that is both visually interesting and functional.
Materials
Convergent Mitts are designed to be knit with fingering weight yarn. The pattern calls for approximately 175 to 260 yards (160 to 240 meters) of yarn, depending on the size selected. The sample shown was created using Queen's Yarn Boutique Kiss Sock in the Wisteria colorway, which is composed of 75% Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Nylon, with a yardage of 463 yards per 100 grams. This blend provides durability, softness, and easy care.
The required tools include Size 2 (2.75 mm) needles in your preferred method for small circumference knitting, or a size needed to meet the specified gauge. Additional notions include 3 stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.
Difficulty Level
Convergent Mitts are classified as an intermediate-level knitting project. While the construction method of knitting in the round is straightforward, the Convergent rib stitch pattern requires attention to detail and familiarity with reading knitting patterns. This project is suitable for knitters who have completed several basic projects and are comfortable working with stitch markers and managing stitches on needles.
