Product Description
We all know a young boy who adores construction machines! My third son LOVES construction machines, and he was the one behind this design coming to the shop. Hook up this construction blanket to sell in your handmade shop - it is sure to be a best seller! You can make it in any size and with any yarn. Pictured is with DK yarn in baby size (approximately 30"x36"). It was hooked by one of my talented pattern testers, Debby Jenniskens. You can follow her on IG as @debbyshaaksels Pattern is written in numerical form. This method is simple and clear instructions are given for this new notation of filet. Need extra help along the way? Just ask! No charts or word patterns are included.
Construction Machine Backhoe Blanket by Mayhem & Majesty
Project Overview
The Under Construction Blanket, designed by Becca Bomgardner, is a charming crochet blanket featuring construction machine and backhoe motifs. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 30 x 36 inches, making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or cozy throw. The design celebrates a construction theme, perfect for nurseries, children's rooms, or as a gift for construction enthusiasts of all ages.
Yarn & Materials
This pattern is designed with flexibility in mind regarding yarn weight and gauge. The pictured baby-sized blanket uses DK weight yarn, requiring 5 balls total. The pattern accommodates various yarn weights, allowing crafters to customize their project based on available materials and desired finished dimensions. You will need two crochet hooks: a 4.5mm hook for the main body and a 4mm hook for the border work. Additional supplies include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Crochet Techniques & Stitches
The Under Construction Blanket is classified as an intermediate difficulty project, incorporating several fundamental and specialty crochet techniques. The pattern uses standard US crochet terminology throughout.
- Foundation Double Crochet (FDC) — A specialty stitch used to create a foundation row with built-in structure, eliminating the need for a separate chain foundation. This technique provides a more polished, finished edge at the blanket's base.
- Double Crochet (dc) — A tall stitch that forms the primary fabric of the blanket, creating drape and coverage efficiently.
- Single Crochet (sc) — A shorter, tighter stitch used for shaping and detail work within the pattern.
- Slip Stitch (sl st) — Used to join rounds and create seamless transitions between pattern sections.
- Crab Stitch (Reverse Single Crochet) — A decorative edging technique worked from left to right (or right to left for left-handed crocheters), creating a textured, rope-like border that frames the blanket beautifully.
- Chain (ch) — The foundation stitch used for turning chains and pattern increases.
Pattern Structure & Customization
The pattern is designed with scalability built in. The blanket can be increased in multiples of 7, allowing crafters to adjust the finished dimensions to their preferences. This flexibility makes it possible to create larger throws or smaller lovey blankets while maintaining the integrity of the construction machine design.
Skill Level & Construction
At the intermediate level, this project assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and techniques. The combination of foundation stitches, standard crochet abbreviations, and specialty techniques like the crab stitch border makes this an excellent project for crafters looking to expand their skills. The pattern's flexibility regarding gauge means that exact tension is not critical, making it more forgiving for developing crocheters while still producing professional results.
