Product Description
This cosy worsted weight hat was born on Constantine Bay beach in Cornwall, UK. The pattern is fairly simple to knit up and makes a great TV project! The cables remind me of ripples in the sand. The hat is worked in the round from the cuff up and constists of knit and cabled stitches which are easily memorised.

Constantine Hat by Faye Perriam-Reed
What is Being Made
The Constantine Hat is a cosy worsted weight knitted hat designed by Faye Perriam-Reed and inspired by Constantine Bay beach in Cornwall, UK. This intermediate-level project features a cable pattern that evokes the appearance of ripples in sand. The hat is available in four sizes to fit head circumferences of 45cm (17¾in), 50cm (19¾in), 55cm (21¾in), and 60cm (23¾in), with corresponding actual hat circumferences of 40cm (15¾in), 45cm (17¾in), 50cm (19¾in), and 55cm (21¾in).
Construction Method
The Constantine Hat is worked in the round from the cuff upward, a popular technique for creating seamless hats with a consistent gauge throughout. This construction method eliminates the need for seaming and allows the knitter to try on the hat as it progresses. The crown-to-hem length measures 19cm (for XS and S sizes) to 23.5cm (for L size), providing adequate coverage and warmth.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern combines straightforward knit and cable stitches that are easily memorised, making it an ideal project for intermediate knitters who want to develop their cable-working skills without excessive complexity. The cable stitches create the distinctive rippled texture that inspired the design. Additional techniques include:
- Make One Left (M1): A stitch increase worked by lifting the strand between needles from front to back and knitting through the back of the loop
- Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK): A left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches knitwise
- Knit and Purl stitches: The foundational stitches that form the base of the pattern
- Place Marker (PM): Used to denote pattern repeats and construction sections
Materials
The Constantine Hat is knitted using worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for cable work and ensures the finished hat is warm and durable. The pattern is worked on needles suitable for worsted weight yarn in the round, allowing the knitter to work continuously without turning.
Project Characteristics
This pattern is described as a great TV project, indicating that once the cable repeat is memorised, the knitter can work on it while watching television or engaging in other activities. The intermediate difficulty level makes it accessible to knitters with some experience while still offering the satisfaction of working with cables. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF and is intended for personal use only.
