Product Description
A versatile jacket that can be worn buttoned or zipped all the way to the top of the collar...to the beach or boardroom. The simple slip stitch colorwork uses only one color per row so there’s no hassle with floats and every other row is a “resting” row. And there is no steeking!
The easy Mosaic colorwork technique makes for a dramatic yoke with a bit of heft to it…perfect for a jacket! A tiny bit of color echoes the design at the cuffs and hemline to pull it all together. Deep and wide ribbing at the hem and cuffs is mirrored by the strong collar. The sweater jacket is worked top down, flat and seamless with a stockinette body and sleeves framed by wide bands of ribbing.
Strongly contrasting colorwork to the body are advised for the most dramatic effect in the yoke and subtle transition between gradient colors within the colorwork is important. For the sample, two strands of fingering gradient were held double and colors were transitioned one strand at a time for the most subtle effect.
Columbia River Cardigan by Kay Hopkins
What is Being Made
The Columbia River Cardigan is a versatile knitted jacket designed by Kay Hopkins that functions as both a traditional cardigan and a bomber-style jacket. This piece features a distinctive colorwork yoke paired with a streamlined stockinette body, offering flexibility in styling through button or zip closures that extend to the top of the collar. The design combines decorative elements with practical construction, making it suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a statement piece with visual impact.
Knitting Techniques Used
This cardigan employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive appearance. The primary technique is Mosaic colorwork, a slip stitch method that creates dramatic patterning without the complexity of traditional stranded colorwork. The Mosaic technique is particularly efficient because it uses only one color per row, eliminating the need to manage multiple active yarns and preventing the formation of long floats on the reverse side. Every other row functions as a "resting" row, reducing tension and simplifying the knitting process. The design also incorporates top-down, flat construction, which allows for seamless shaping and the ability to try on the piece as you work. Notably, this pattern requires no steeking, making it more accessible than some colorwork projects.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Columbia River Cardigan utilizes fundamental stitches arranged in strategic patterns. The main body and sleeves are worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth, refined surface that showcases the colorwork yoke. The yoke itself features slip stitch colorwork (Mosaic technique), which creates bold geometric patterns through selective yarn overs and slipped stitches. Ribbing plays a structural and aesthetic role throughout the design, with deep and wide ribbed bands framing the hemline, cuffs, and collar. This ribbing provides both functional stretch and visual definition, anchoring the piece and preventing rolling at the edges.
Color and Design Details
The cardigan's design emphasizes color contrast to maximize visual impact. Strongly contrasting colors are recommended for the yoke colorwork to create the most dramatic effect. The pattern suggests using a mini-skein set of gradient colors for the yoke, allowing for subtle transitions between hues that add sophistication to the colorwork section. A coordinating color echoes the yoke design at the cuffs and hemline, creating visual cohesion throughout the piece and tying the design elements together.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
The Columbia River Cardigan is designed to be worked with DK weight yarn, a lightweight to medium yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for colorwork while remaining comfortable for layering. The specific needle size and yardage requirements are detailed in the full pattern. The DK weight is ideal for the Mosaic colorwork technique, as it allows stitches to remain clear and defined without excessive bulk, while still providing enough substance for the garment to have the desired "heft" appropriate for a jacket.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it accessible to knitters with foundational skills who are ready to expand their technical repertoire. While the Mosaic colorwork technique may be new to some knitters, the pattern's design—using only one color per row and eliminating floats—makes it more forgiving than traditional stranded colorwork. The top-down, seamless construction is a technique many intermediate knitters have already mastered, further supporting the appropriate difficulty rating.
