Product Description
The entire body of this blanket is textured, including the Intarsia colorwork. At points in the pattern you will be working with up to 15 threads. The texturing allows the blanket to lay flat without blocking.
I recommend using stitch markers placed every 10 stitches to help keep your place on the charts as well as for marking off the hem (a total of 15 markers).
As designed the pattern requires 4 balls (about 800 yds or 732 meters) of background color and 1 ball of each of 4 colors (200 yds, 183 M) worsted weight yarn.
Color Swirl Blanket by Nancy Hand
Project Overview
The Color Swirl Blanket is an advanced knitting project designed by Nancy Hand that creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 40 inches (102 cm) square. This downloadable PDF pattern combines colorwork and textural stitch techniques to produce a sophisticated throw blanket suitable for experienced knitters seeking a challenging and rewarding project.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a large knitted blanket featuring a vibrant color design set against a soft white background. The blanket is square in proportion and functions as a decorative throw or functional blanket for home use. The finished piece showcases an intricate pattern that blends color work with dimensional stitch textures.
Primary Technique: Intarsia Colorwork
The Color Swirl Blanket is worked using the Intarsia method, a colorwork technique that allows knitters to incorporate multiple colors into a design by working with separate yarn bobbins for each color section. This method creates clean color transitions and is ideal for large-scale pictorial or geometric designs. Intarsia differs from stranded colorwork in that yarns are not carried across the back of the work, resulting in a flatter, less bulky fabric that drapes beautifully.
Stitch Patterns Used
The Color Swirl Blanket incorporates two distinct stitch patterns:
- Pyramid Stitch: A knit and purl variation used for the hem sections, creating a textured border that frames the main blanket body. This stitch is worked for 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) at both the top and bottom edges, providing a finished, dimensional frame.
- Diamond Brocade Pattern: The entire body of the blanket features this knit and purl textured pattern overlaid on the Intarsia colorwork. The Diamond Brocade creates visual interest and dimensional texture while the color design is worked simultaneously, combining both techniques into a unified fabric.
Pattern Specifications and Construction
The pattern chart measures 140 stitches wide by 206 rows tall. The designer worked 9 stitches of each outside column for a total of 138 stitches from the chart, plus 12 stitches for the right hem and 12 stitches for the left hem, creating a total cast-on of 162 stitches. An additional 10 rows of white yarn (the background color) are worked above and below the main chart for a total of 226 rows, providing balanced white space framing the central design.
Materials Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for Encore Worsted weight yarn in the following quantities and colors:
- 4 balls of Soft White #146 (background and primary color)
- 1 ball each of Red #1386, Turquoise #235, Yellow #1382, and Lime #3335 (accent colors for the swirl design)
Needles: Size 10 US (6.0 mm) needles are required for this project.
Optional Notions: 15 stitch markers are optional but recommended to help track pattern repeats and hem placements throughout the knitting process.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 16 stitches by 22.5 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for reaching the intended finished size of 40 inches (102 cm) square. Knitters should always swatch and measure gauge before beginning the project to ensure accurate finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills. The combination of Intarsia colorwork, multiple stitch patterns, and the large scale of the project requires patience, attention to detail, and familiarity with managing multiple yarn colors and complex stitch sequences simultaneously.
