Color Punch Hat by Angela Radzyuk

What is Being Made

The Color Punch Hat is a knitted beanie designed to showcase the vibrant beauty of hand-dyed yarns. This hat is worked in the round and features three available sizes: Small (19.5-21 inches circumference), Medium (21.5-23 inches circumference), and Large (24-25.5 inches circumference). The design maximizes color display, making it an ideal project for crafters who want to feature single skeins of gorgeous hand-dyed yarn from their stash. The finished hat is perfect for everyday wear, travel, and gift-giving.

Techniques Used

This hat is knit in the round, which creates a seamless, tubular fabric ideal for hat construction. The pattern employs slipped stitch colorwork, a technique that creates visual interest and color variation without the complexity of traditional stranded colorwork. A distinctive feature of this design is knitting two strands held together, which combines multiple colors simultaneously to create the signature "color punch" effect. This double-strand technique maximizes the visual impact of hand-dyed yarns and adds depth to the finished garment. The project is classified as beginner-friendly, making it accessible to knitters new to in-the-round construction and colorwork techniques.

Stitches Used

  • Slipped stitches: Used to create the colorwork pattern and add visual texture without increasing complexity
  • Knit stitches: Form the basic fabric structure throughout the hat
  • Ribbing: Likely used for the brim to provide stretch and a finished edge (standard hat construction)

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Color Punch Hat is designed to work with fingering weight or DK weight yarn. The pattern references Hedgehog Fibres "Sporty Merino," a 100% merino wool yarn at 17.5 micron fineness with 437 yards per 3.5 ounces (400 meters per 100 grams). One skein of yarn is required for this project. The pattern notes that although Sporty Merino is listed as sport weight, it knits up as fingering weight, offering flexibility in yarn selection. Two strands of yarn are held together and knitted simultaneously, which means crafters should plan yardage accordingly. This hat is worked on circular needles appropriate for knitting in the round, sized to achieve the correct gauge with the double-strand yarn combination.

Design Inspiration and Features

Designer Angela Radzyuk created the Color Punch Hat to solve a common crafter's dilemma: using up single skeins of beautiful hand-dyed yarn. By holding two strands together and incorporating slipped stitch colorwork, the design maximizes color visibility and celebrates the unique characteristics of hand-dyed fibers. The pattern is described as "effortless" and keeps knitters engaged as colors emerge throughout the project. Its portable, on-the-go nature makes it ideal for crafters seeking projects that travel well and work up relatively quickly.
