Product Description

Some words that comes to mind when I knit up a cup cozy/sleeve/mughug…

Sustainability. Eco friendly.

The best part is you can have matching socks. MY CHEVY SOCKS

It’s a very usable finished product. Yes, we are knitting all the dishcloth (WHICH I ABSOLUTELY CAN GET BEHIND) ;-), but let’s think outside of the box.

This knitted cup cozy is the perfect accent for your to-go cup while you’re hanging out in your favorite coffee shop, got it to-go so you can relax on your deck, or just plain want to jaz up your own ceramic cup with no handle.

Super easy pattern that can be made in an afternoon. I suggest making lots and give as gifts.

The yarn is fingering weight. When I put in the yards needed, I was unsure, because honestly, if you’ve knit socks you know you have a leftover ball. Use that!

When I weighed in on my scale, it weighed 11 grams. So very little needed for this. Great stash buster.

Happy Knitting!!

Coffee Bean Cup Cozy by Deb Buckingham

What Is Being Made

The Coffee Bean Cup Cozy is a sustainable knitted accessory designed to slip over disposable coffee cups at cafes and coffee shops. Rather than relying on cardboard sleeves, this cozy provides an eco-friendly alternative that can be taken along and reused repeatedly. The project is specifically engineered as a quick afternoon knitting project, making it ideal for crafters seeking a fast, gratifying make.

Craft and Technique

This is a knitting project worked on double-pointed needles (DPNs) in the round, which allows for seamless construction typical of small circumference items like cup cozies. The pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners, making it an excellent entry-level project for those new to circular knitting.

Stitches Used

The Coffee Bean Cup Cozy incorporates the following essential knitting stitches:

  • Knit (K)—the foundational stitch creating the fabric structure
  • Purl (P)—used to create textural variation and pattern definition
  • Yarn Over (yo)—creates decorative eyelet holes for lace or openwork details
  • K2tog (Knit 2 Together)—a right-leaning decrease stitch for shaping
  • SSK (Slip Slip Knit)—a left-leaning decrease stitch created by slipping two stitches purlwise one at a time, then knitting them together through the front loop

Materials and Specifications

The pattern calls for US 1/2.25 mm needles, specifically double-pointed needles (DPNs) to accommodate the small circumference knitting required for a cup cozy. Fingering weight yarn (equivalent to 4-ply weight) is used throughout, with the sample photographed knit in Artistic Yarn by Abi. The recommended gauge is 7-8 stitches per inch, which ensures the cozy will fit standard coffee cup sizes while maintaining appropriate fabric density.

Difficulty Level

Rated as a beginner project, the Coffee Bean Cup Cozy is accessible to knitters new to the craft or those gaining confidence with circular needle techniques. The quick completion time—described as an afternoon project—provides immediate satisfaction and a practical finished item.
