Cofaidh Cosy by Tracey Lee

What is Being Made

The Cofaidh Cosy is a knitted tea and coffee cup cozy designed to insulate hot beverages. The name "Cofaidh" comes from Scottish Gaelic, meaning coffee, though the cosy works equally well for tea, hot chocolate, and even cold drinks. Two size options are available: a Short cosy measuring 7.5 cm (3 inches) in height, and a Tall cosy measuring 11.5 cm (4.5 inches) in height. The cosy is designed to fit cups with a circumference of 18–23 cm (7–9 inches).

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Cofaidh Cosy is worked flat using a straightforward knitting method, making it an excellent beginner-friendly project. The piece is knitted to the required length and circumference, then finished by joining to form a tube. Alternatively, the design offers flexibility with an optional button closure, allowing crafters to choose their preferred finishing method based on personal preference or the desired aesthetic.

Stitches Used

This pattern features a combination of fundamental knitting stitches suitable for beginners:

  • Garter Stitch – Forms the main background of the cosy, created by knitting every row. This stitch produces a textured, reversible fabric that is ideal for insulation.
  • Cable Stitch – A 2/2 Left Cable (2/2LC) is featured as a decorative rope cable element. This stitch is worked by slipping 2 stitches to a cable needle, placing it at the front of the work, knitting the next 2 stitches, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates an attractive twisted rope effect.
  • Slip Stitch – Used purlwise with yarn at back, this stitch appears in the pattern abbreviations and contributes to neat edge finishing.

Materials and Specifications

The Cofaidh Cosy is knitted using DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8 ply), which provides a medium weight suitable for creating a cosy with good insulation properties without excessive bulk. Approximately 35–50 meters (40–55 yards) of yarn is required to complete a cosy to fit the specified 18–23 cm (7–9 inch) circumference.

Needles: 3.75 mm (US 5) needles are recommended, or a size required to achieve the specified gauge. The pattern accommodates various needle styles, allowing knitters to use their preferred needles for knitting flat.

Additional Materials: Two stitch markers are required to track pattern repeats and shaping. Two buttons are optional and may be selected to coordinate with the yarn color for a decorative button closure finish.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches and 32 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) when worked in garter stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the cosy fits the intended cup circumference.

Difficulty Level

This is a beginner-level knitting project. The straightforward construction, use of basic stitches, and flat knitting method make it accessible to those new to knitting. The cable stitch, while slightly more advanced than garter stitch alone, is clearly explained and provides an excellent introduction to cable techniques without overwhelming complexity.
