Product Description

Clover Beanie As a child I would spend hours picking wild flowers from the verges and banks near our home. Making daisy chains, blowing dandelion clocks and of course hunting for a lucky four leafed clover! My design has been based on the different colours of clover in the open ground near our home and I hope the four leafed clover motif brings you luck too!

Clover Beanie by Olach Designs

Project Overview

The Clover Beanie is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Olach Designs, inspired by the natural colors of clover found in open ground and the cherished childhood tradition of hunting for lucky four-leafed clovers. This downloadable knitting pattern features a charming four-leafed clover motif worked in multiple colors, bringing both visual interest and symbolic luck to the finished garment.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a fitted beanie hat in one size, designed to be worked in the round using traditional knitting techniques. The hat features a colorwork design based on the four-leafed clover theme, with the motif incorporated throughout the crown and body of the hat. The design celebrates the different natural hues found in clover varieties, translating them into a wearable accessory.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Clover Beanie is worked primarily in the round, utilizing circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) depending on knitter preference. The pattern employs colorwork knitting, incorporating multiple yarn colors to create the four-leafed clover motif. Knitters have the flexibility to transition from circular needles to DPNs when working the crown shaping, a common technique for managing decreases in hat construction. The pattern requires basic in-the-round knitting skills and comfort with color changes, making it suitable for intermediate-level knitters.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern information, the construction involves working in the round with shaping at the crown. The hat is designed to accommodate the transition between needle types as the stitch count decreases toward the top, a standard approach in hat knitting. Finishing techniques include weaving in ends using a tapestry needle and blocking the finished hat for proper shape and drape.

Yarn and Materials

The Clover Beanie is designed to be worked with Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift, a 100% pure Shetland wool yarn in the 4-ply weight category. This yarn weight provides excellent stitch definition for colorwork patterns. The pattern requires one 25-gram ball (approximately 105 meters) each of eight coordinated shades:

  • A: Purple Heather 239
  • B: Raspberry 1260
  • C: Old Rose 556
  • D: Sorbet 570
  • E: Natural White 104
  • F: Sand 183
  • G: Oyster 290
  • H: Camel 141
  • I: Lipstick 575

Needles and Notions

The pattern calls for two needle sizes to accommodate different sections of the hat. Knitters will need 2.5mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for the initial ribbed cuff and body, and 3mm double-pointed needles or circular needles for the main pattern section. Additional notions include a stitch marker for tracking the beginning of rounds, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, and either a balloon or hat blocker for finishing and shaping the completed beanie.

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

The 4-ply weight classification combined with pure Shetland wool creates a yarn ideal for colorwork patterns, as the thinner ply allows for crisp stitch definition and clear color transitions. Shetland wool is known for its softness, warmth, and subtle color variations, making it an excellent choice for a hat design celebrating natural color palettes. The yardage provided is sufficient for a one-size beanie, with the total yardage across all eight colors providing adequate material for the complete hat construction.
