Clinton Creek Hat by Irina Anikeeva
What is Being Made
The Clinton Creek Hat is a knitted beanie designed by independent designer Irina Anikeeva. This intermediate-level hat is crafted to fit average adult head sizes ranging from 20 to 22 inches (51 to 56 centimeters) in circumference. The finished hat measures 20 inches (51 centimeters) around the brim and stands 7 3/4 inches (20 centimeters) tall from the base of the ribbing to the top-center of the crown when the brim is folded.
Construction Technique
The Clinton Creek Hat is worked in the round from the bottom up, a popular method for creating seamless, fitted hats. A distinctive feature of this design is that the body of the hat above the brim is worked with the wrong side facing outward. This unconventional approach allows the cabled brim to be folded up, creating a reversible or textured effect when worn. The hat is constructed using a provisional cast-on method, which allows for a clean, finished edge and the flexibility to pick up stitches from a temporary chain.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Clinton Creek Hat pattern incorporates cable stitches as a primary design element, particularly featured in the brim section. The pattern uses a crochet chain provisional cast-on technique, which involves using scrap yarn and a crochet hook to create a temporary foundation. Stitches are then picked up and knitted through the purl bumps on the back of the chain, allowing for easy removal of the provisional cast-on when instructed in the pattern. The ribbing at the base provides structure and elasticity, while the cables add visual interest and texture throughout the design.
Materials
The Clinton Creek Hat requires approximately 270 yards (247 meters) of worsted weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Classic Elite Yarns MountainTop Vista, a blend of 50% superfine alpaca and 50% wool, which provides warmth and softness. The pattern calls for three 50-gram skeins in the colorway #6016 Alabaster. Knitting needles appropriate for worsted weight yarn are required, along with a crochet hook for executing the provisional cast-on technique using scrap yarn.
