Clementin Hat & Scarf Knitting Pattern by MillaMia
The Clementin Hat & Scarf is a beginner-level knitting pattern from MillaMia, designed to be worked in MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino yarn. The pattern includes instructions for a ribbed hat with a shaped crown and two scarf variations, both featuring clever built-in pockets. This is an ideal project for knitters who are new to shaping and colourwork, offering a satisfying and practical result with straightforward techniques.
The Hat
The Clementin Hat is a one-size design worked flat on straight needles and then seamed to finish. The construction uses a combination of ribbing at the brim and classic stocking stitch for the body, with a fully shaped crown achieved through a series of structured decrease rows.
Hat Construction and Shaping
The crown shaping is worked methodically across multiple right-side rows, using k2tog decreases repeated nine times across the row, reducing the stitch count progressively. Each decrease row is separated by a plain purl row, creating a smooth, even taper to the top of the hat. This technique is a wonderful introduction to garment shaping for beginner knitters, as the repeat is consistent and easy to follow.
Hat Techniques and Stitches
- Rib stitch for the brim
- Stocking stitch for the main body
- k2tog decreases for crown shaping
- Worked flat on straight needles
- Seamed to finish
- Two-colour stripe detail
Hat Materials
- One 50g ball of MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino in Fuchsia (143) — used as Main colour (M)
- Two 50g balls of MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino in Daisy Yellow (141) — used as Contrast colour (C)
- A pair of 3mm (US 2) needles and a pair of 3.25mm (US 3) needles
The Scarf — Two Variations
The pattern offers two distinct scarf designs, both sharing the same finished dimensions of approximately 15cm/6in wide by 130cm/51in long and both featuring the same clever pocket construction. Each end of the scarf is folded back onto the right side and the side seams are sewn to create a functional pocket at each end — a practical and stylish detail that makes this scarf stand out. Both scarves are worked in a 3x3 rib stitch throughout, which creates a beautifully stretchy, reversible fabric with excellent drape and structure.
Scarf Variation 1 — Scarf with Pockets (Two-Colour Block)
The first scarf variation is a bold two-colour block design. The scarf is cast on using the Main colour (M) and worked entirely in 3x3 rib until the piece measures 79cm/31in. The Main colour is then cut, the Contrast colour (C) is joined, and ribbing continues until the scarf reaches 158cm/62in in total length. The result is a striking, clean colour-block effect with each half of the scarf in a different colour. To finish, the first and last 14cm/5½in of the scarf are folded to the right side and the side seams are sewn to form the pockets.
Scarf Variation 2 — Scarf with Stripes and Pockets
The second scarf variation introduces stripe sequences at each end, framing a solid-colour centre section. The scarf begins with 6cm/2½in in Contrast colour (C), followed by two repeats of [4 rows M, 8 rows C], creating a rhythmic striped border. The centre of
