Product Description
Justyna gave her lovely cardigan the name Càirdeas. Whether she was dreaming about the music of the Scottish folk band or whether she thought of the meaning, Friendship, will remain her secret. She combines a simple 1/1-rib with a playful, but easy lace pattern, making the cardigan interes-ting and fun to knit. For Càirdeas she chose Mountains, an intense, warm shade of green, which happens to be her favourite colour.

Càirdeas Cardigan by Justyna Lorkowska
What is Being Made
Càirdeas is a knitted cardigan designed by Justyna Lorkowska, available in six sizes ranging from XS to XXL. The finished chest measurements span from 76.5 cm (30.75 inches) for the smallest size to 114 cm (45.75 inches) for the largest size. This cardigan is designed to be worn with up to 5 cm (2 inches) of negative or positive ease at the bust, offering versatility in fit and styling options.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
The Càirdeas cardigan employs intermediate-level knitting techniques suitable for crafters with foundational skills. The garment is constructed using circular needles, which allow for seamless knitting in the round and flat sections. The pattern utilizes a repeating eight-row motif that creates visual interest and texture throughout the piece. Techniques incorporated include yarn overs, decreases, and stitch manipulations that require attention to detail and understanding of shaping methods.
Stitches Used
The pattern features a combination of fundamental and decorative stitches:
- Knit and purl stitches form the foundation of the fabric and create textured edges
- Yarn overs (yo) create decorative openings and lace-like elements throughout the design
- Knit two together (k2tog) for right-leaning decreases
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) for left-leaning decreases
- Purl two together through the back loop (p2tog tbl) for decreases on wrong-side rows
These stitches combine to create a repeating pattern that balances increases and decreases, resulting in a fabric with openwork details and refined shaping.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Càirdeas cardigan is worked in DK weight yarn, requiring 3 to 6 skeins depending on size selection. The recommended yarn is Nature's Luxury On Stage, a luxury blend composed of 50% merino wool, 30% silk, and 20% camel fiber. Each skein contains 300 meters (328 yards) per 100 grams. This fiber composition creates a cardigan with excellent drape, breathability, and a luxurious hand feel. The sample shown in the pattern is displayed in the colorway Mountains.
Needles and Tools
The pattern calls for three different needle sizes to accommodate gauge adjustments and different sections of the cardigan:
- 4.0 mm (US #6) circular needle in 80 cm (32 inch) length, plus double-pointed needles
- 3.75 mm (US #5) circular needle in 80 cm (32 inch) length, plus double-pointed needles
- 3.5 mm (US #4) circular needle for additional shaping and finishing
The use of multiple needle sizes allows for gauge control and creates subtle transitions in fabric density, which is common in intermediate cardigan construction.
Pattern Summary
The Càirdeas cardigan is an intermediate knitting project that combines luxury yarn with elegant stitch work. The repeating eight-row pattern creates a balanced, visually interesting fabric through the strategic use of yarn overs and decreases. The six available sizes ensure a proper fit for a wide range of body types, and the option for negative or positive ease allows knitters to customize the final garment to their preferences. With its blend of merino, silk, and camel fiber, this cardigan produces a refined, wearable piece suitable for various occasions and seasons.
