Product Description
Meaning honeycomb in Scottish Gaelic, Cìr-Mheala is named for the beautiful honeycomb brioche pattern that makes up the border. Slipped stitch bands give a beautiful divide between the stocking stitch and brioche and give a beautiful bind-off edge. Stretched well during blocking the honeycomb pattern retains a slightly textured pattern, but also gives a beautiful lacey effect.
The pattern is written for 100g, 200g, and 300g of fingering weight yarn, but is also highly adjustable so you can make the best use of your yarn! The sample is shown in the Medium size, with 200g of The Fibre Fox Merino Singles in Terracotta Blush.
The pattern is fully written and charted so whichever way you like to read your patterns, you’re covered! The pattern has been tech edited and test knitted. There’s a screenshot of the pattern and a list of the stitches used at the bottom of the photos.
Cìr-Mheala has a matching cowlette! Check out Mealach for all the details!
Cìr-Mheala Knitted Shawl by Liz Corke
What is Being Made
Cìr-Mheala is a downloadable knitting pattern for a triangular shawl named after the Scottish Gaelic word meaning honeycomb. The design features a distinctive honeycomb brioche pattern border that frames the body of the shawl, creating visual depth and textural interest. This intermediate-level knitting project is highly adjustable and available in three finished sizes to accommodate different yarn quantities and personal preferences.
Finished Sizes
- Small: 123 cm long by 53 cm deep (48.5" by 21")
- Medium: 176 cm long by 75 cm deep (69" by 30")
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Cìr-Mheala pattern combines several knitting techniques to create its distinctive appearance. Stocking stitch forms the main body of the shawl, providing a smooth, classic foundation. The standout design element is the honeycomb brioche pattern that creates the decorative border. Slipped stitch bands are strategically placed throughout the design to create beautiful visual divides between the stocking stitch sections and the brioche pattern work. These slipped stitches also contribute to a refined bind-off edge that finishes the shawl professionally.
Materials and Gauge
The pattern is written for fingering weight yarn in three yardage options: 100g (366 meters/400 yards), 200g (732 meters/800 yards), or 300g (1098 meters/1200 yards). The original design was created using The Fibre Fox Merino Singles, a 100% Superwash Merino single-ply yarn that provides 400 yards per 100 grams. Knitters should work to a gauge of 22 stitches and 36 rows in 10 cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch, measured after blocking, to ensure accurate finished dimensions.
Tools and Notions Required
- 4 mm (US 6) circular needles, 100 cm (40") long, or size needed to achieve gauge
- 4 stitch markers
- Yarn needle for sewing in ends
- Blocking mat and pins
Pattern Adjustability
The Cìr-Mheala pattern is highly adjustable, allowing knitters to customize the shawl to make the best use of their available yarn. This flexibility means that variations in personal gauge or yarn weight can be accommodated within the pattern structure, though differences in gauge will affect both the amount of yarn used and the final size of the finished shawl. Knitters are encouraged to measure their gauge carefully after blocking to ensure the most accurate results.
