Cinque Terre Cabled Cuneate Shawl
What is Being Made
The Cinque Terre Cabled Cuneate is a triangular shawl designed by Linda Lehman and published by Wearable Art Emporium. This knitted shawl features a right-angle triangular construction, making it versatile and easy to wear. The cuneate shape is achieved through strategic increase instructions that create a geometric, wearable design suitable for intermediate knitters with cable experience.
Knitting Techniques
This shawl incorporates multiple advanced knitting techniques that work together to create visual interest and texture. The primary techniques include:
- Cable knitting – Two distinct cables are featured throughout the design, requiring knitters to work cable crosses at specified intervals
- Lace faggotting stitch – An openwork lace technique that creates decorative holes and delicate patterning
- Bottom-up construction – The shawl is knit from the bottom edge upward, with increases worked to expand the triangular shape
- Charted patterns – The design uses stitch charts to guide cable placement and lace patterning
Stitches Used
The Cinque Terre Cabled Cuneate employs a combination of essential knitting stitches to achieve its textured appearance. The primary stitch pattern is the Cable Lace stitch, which combines cable crosses with faggotting (yarn over and decrease combinations) to create openwork sections. Cable stitches are worked at regular intervals as indicated by the pattern charts, while the faggotting technique produces the characteristic lace elements that balance the density of the cables.
Materials and Tools
This intermediate-level shawl requires the following materials and equipment:
- Yarn: 950 to 1,100 yards of worsted weight (aran weight) yarn
- Needles: U.S. size #8 (4.00mm) needles with a cable length of at least 36 inches to accommodate the expanding stitches
- Notions: Stitch markers and row counters are optional but recommended to track pattern repeats and cable crossings
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 4.5 stitches and 7.5 rows per inch when measured in the Cable Lace stitch after moderate blocking. Knitters are advised to swatch using rows 63–73 from chart #2 with 11–34 stitches to verify gauge before beginning the full project. While exact gauge is not critical to the shawl's wearability, variations will affect the finished size and total yardage required.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as Intermediate and assumes knitters have solid working knowledge of cable techniques, including cable crosses and reading cable charts. Familiarity with lace knitting and yarn overs is also beneficial for successful completion of this design.
