Product Description
This cable pattern has been rolling around in my head for quite awhile. I thought it would be perfect as a mirrored pair so socks were the obvious choice. The cable panel made me think of smoke spiraling away from a fire and the small flecks of gray in the yarn made me think of ashes hence the name: Cinder Twist.
These socks are knit from the toe up and use an afterthought heel. To keep them comfy and easy to wear the foot has a ‘princess sole’ and the back of the leg is simple, squishy ribbing. The cable panel snakes it’s way from the toe to the cuff.
Sizes: Womens, (Mens/Womens Wide, Mens Wide)
Flat measurements: 3.5 (3.75, 4) inches
As these socks are knit from the toe up it is very easy to adjust width and length.
Needle: size 5/3.75mm DPNs or 1 long circular in each size. The gauge looks a little weird because it is measured with a non-standard gauge pattern. I knit 11 sts of 1x1 ribbing and 14 sts of the cable pattern for 25 sts total. This gave me 3 inches unstretched.

What is Being Made
Cinder Twist Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for women's and men's socks in multiple sizes. The design features a distinctive twisted cable pattern combined with ribbed sections, creating a textured and visually interesting sock suitable for various foot and leg widths. The pattern includes sizing for Womens, Womens wide, Mens, and Mens wide feet, with finished flat instep measurements ranging from 3.5 to 4 inches unstretched.
Knitting Techniques
This sock pattern employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques. The socks are knit from the toe up, a construction method that allows for easy adjustment and fitting. The pattern features an afterthought heel construction, which provides flexibility in heel placement and repair. The design incorporates both ribbed sections and cable pattern work, requiring knitters to work with stitch markers and a cable needle to create the twisted elements. The ribbed nature of the sock construction provides substantial stretch, making the finished socks adaptable to different foot and leg widths despite the specific finished measurements.
Stitches Used
- 1x1 Ribbing: Used throughout portions of the sock for elasticity and texture
- Cable Pattern: Creates the signature twisted design element of the socks
Materials and Tools
Yarn: Approximately 275 yards of light worsted or DK weight yarn. The sample shown uses Neighborhood Fiber Co Studio DK, which is 100% superwash merino at 275 yards per 4 ounces, in the colorway Mt Vernon.
Needles and Notions: US 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles or one long circular needle, cable needle, darning needle, and stitch markers.
Gauge and Pattern Notes
The gauge for this pattern is 25 stitches by 24 rows over 3 inches, measured over the cable pattern. The ribbed swatch gauge is 11 stitches of 1x1 ribbing and 14 stitches of cable pattern. Instructions are provided for knitting on three double-pointed needles, though the pattern can easily be adapted for knitting on one long circular needle using the magic loop or similar circular knitting method.
