Product Description
Knit a cuddly chunky monkey toy with big ears.
This knitting pattern gives you step-by-step instructions to knit your monkey in any colour stripes you like, and you'll only need 4mm straight knitting needles, a darning needle, two colours of DK yarn, a scrap of grey yarn for the features and some toy stuffing.
For the yarn we recommend: King Cole Big Value Baby DK yarn in PEACH (4066). You’ll need approx one and a quarter of their 50g balls (or any other peach colour DK yarn you like) A small ball of contrasting colour DK yarn for the stripes (for the pink we recommend Sirdar's Hayfield Bonus DK 992 but any Dk yarn will work) one 25g King Cole Dollymix DK yarn ball is more than enough yarn for example. Marriner DK Midget 25g is also the right size. Knitted flat on 4mm straight knitting needles, this pattern is aimed at confident beginners to intermediate knitters.
Monkey measures 34cm tall when finished.
Chunky Monkey Toy Knitting Pattern by Gift Horse Kits
What is Being Made
The Chunky Monkey Toy is a knitted stuffed animal toy designed as an intermediate-level knitting project. This playful monkey toy is created using the knitting technique and finished with toy stuffing to create a three-dimensional plush companion.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters:
- Stocking Stitch - The primary fabric construction method, created by alternating knit rows with purl rows to produce a smooth, classic knitted surface
- Increases - Shaping is achieved using the kfb (knitting in the front and back of a stitch) technique to add stitches where needed for the toy's contours
- Decreases - The ssk (slip, slip, knit) method is used to decrease stitches, allowing the knitter to shape the toy's form and close seams
- K2tog - An alternative decrease technique employed throughout the pattern for shaping
- Striping - Color work is incorporated using contrasting yarn to create decorative stripes on the toy
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches that form the foundation of this intermediate project:
- Knit Stitch (K) - The primary stitch forming the front of the fabric
- Purl Stitch (P) - Used in alternation with knit stitches to create stocking stitch
Materials Required
Needles: A pair of 4mm straight knitting needles provides the appropriate gauge for this project.
Yarn: The pattern calls for DK weight yarn in multiple colors:
- Approximately one and a quarter 50g balls of King Cole Big Value Baby DK yarn in PEACH (4066) for the main body, or any peach-colored DK yarn alternative
- A contrasting DK weight yarn for stripes - Sirdar Bonus DK 992 in pink is recommended, though any DK yarn works; a single 25g ball such as King Cole Dollymix DK or Marriner DK Midget provides more than sufficient yardage
- Grey yarn for embroidered facial features
Additional Supplies: A darning needle for finishing and weaving in ends, and toy stuffing to fill the completed knitted form and create dimension.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle shaping techniques, color changes, and toy assembly.
