Product Description

If you’d like to see full information about this pattern, please visit http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/chudnovsky-pi . . . . . . . If you’d like to see other work by Kourtney Robinson, please visit her designer page here http://www.ravelry.com/designers/kourtney-robinson . . . . . . . Sometimes Pi is like a Frisbee, other times its 3.1415927… The Chudnovskys may not be as well known; they’re mathematician brothers who calculated Pi to several billion digits using a supercomputer they built in their apartment. The shawl is based on EZ's Pi shawl, and starts as a half-circle. Like Pi, it extends, and in fact it is greater than a circle by the time you finish. The edging (knit on sideways) shows off the color changes in highly variegated yarns and ensures a nice, elastic edge. Perfect for travel knitting, the pattern rows are simple and interspersed by soothing stockinette. Stitch counts are provided for each row.

Chudnovsky Pi Knitted Shawl by Kourtney Robinson

Project Overview

Chudnovsky Pi is an advanced-level knitted shawl design created by Kourtney Robinson and presented by Dollybird Workshop. This downloadable PDF pattern (Version 2.1, dated July 11, 2011) draws inspiration from Elizabeth Zimmermann's classic Pi shawl construction method. The design cleverly merges mathematical concept with textile artistry: just as Pi extends infinitely beyond the circle, this shawl begins as a half-circle and expands to dimensions greater than a complete circle by the time knitting is complete. The pattern celebrates the Chudnovsky brothers, mathematician pioneers who set multiple world records for calculating Pi to billions of digits using a supercomputer built in their New York apartment.

What Is Being Made

The Chudnovsky Pi is a geometric shawl that combines mathematical inspiration with wearable design. Starting from a half-circle foundation, the shawl grows outward in expanding rounds, creating a larger-than-circle final shape that references the infinite nature of Pi (3.1415927…). This is a sophisticated accessory suitable for advanced knitters seeking a project with both conceptual depth and technical challenge.

Knitting Techniques

  • Circular construction method based on Elizabeth Zimmermann's Pi shawl framework
  • Radial expansion from a central half-circle starting point
  • Progressive increases that create geometric growth throughout the pattern
  • Advanced shaping techniques requiring strong foundational knitting skills

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the available pattern excerpt, the Chudnovsky Pi employs the mathematical principles of the Pi shawl construction, which typically involves strategic increases and decreases to achieve its expanding circular form. Advanced knitters will encounter complex stitch patterns and shaping that demand precision and understanding of how individual stitches contribute to the overall geometric design.

Yarn and Materials

This shawl is designed to be knitted with sport-weight yarn held together in combination. The pattern offers flexibility in yarn selection:

  • Option 1: Fleece Artist "Merino 2/6" (100% Merino; 350m/385yd per 115g skein) held together with Fleece Artist "Angel Hair" (70% kid mohair, 30% nylon; 400m/440yd per 50g skein) – requires 1 skein of each
  • Option 2: Fleece Artist Merino Angel (58% Merino, 30% Mohair, 12% Nylon; 335m/366yd per 100g skein) – requires 1.5 skeins

The yarn combinations feature luxury fibers including merino wool, kid mohair, and nylon blends, creating a shawl with drape, softness, and subtle sheen. Sport weight provides an ideal balance for the intricate geometric construction while remaining workable for advanced techniques.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an advanced project, the Chudnovsky Pi is intended for experienced knitters with strong technical skills. The mathematical construction, geometric shaping, and precision required throughout make this pattern unsuitable for beginners or intermediate knitters. Success requires comfort with reading complex patterns, managing increases and decreases, and understanding three-dimensional shaping principles.
