Christmas Wreath, Chains & Tree – Knitting Pattern by Debbie Bliss

This downloadable PDF knitting pattern by Debbie Bliss contains instructions for creating a set of festive handmade Christmas decorations and homeware pieces: a Christmas Wreath, decorative Chains, and a knitted Christmas Tree. Designed at an intermediate difficulty level, this pattern is a wonderful seasonal project for knitters who want to add a handcrafted, heirloom-quality touch to their holiday décor. All three designs are worked using the worked flat technique, meaning pieces are knitted back and forth in rows rather than in the round.

About the Christmas Wreath

The centrepiece of this pattern is a beautifully detailed knitted Christmas Wreath, complete with individually knitted leaves and holly berries. The finished wreath frame measures 30cm (12 inches) in diameter, and each knitted leaf measures approximately 7cm (2¾ inches) in length. The construction combines knitting with simple assembly techniques, making it a satisfying mixed-craft project.

Techniques Used for the Wreath

  • Worked flat – all pieces are knitted back and forth in rows on straight needles
  • Shaping – increases and decreases are used to form the tapered leaf shapes
  • Bead placement – a specialised technique (pb: place bead) is used, bringing the yarn to the front, slipping a stitch, and sliding the bead into position against the work before returning the yarn to the back
  • Wire framing – florists' wire cut into 10cm (4in) lengths is bent and inserted along the seam of each leaf on the wrong side, allowing the leaves to be shaped and attached to the wire frame
  • Assembly – the wire frame is bound with green florists' tape before leaves are twisted into place and berries are attached randomly across the wreath

Stitches Used for the Wreath

  • Knit (k) and Purl (p) – the foundational stitches throughout
  • Kfb – knit into the front and back of a stitch (increase)
  • K2tog – knit two stitches together (decrease)
  • K3tog – knit three stitches together (decrease)
  • S2togkpo – slip 2 stitches together, knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over (double decrease)
  • Ssk / ssp – slip, slip, knit / slip, slip, purl (directional decreases)
  • M1 – make one (increase)
  • Stocking stitch (St st)
  • Pb (place bead) – a decorative bead-placement technique integrated into the knitting

Holly Berries

Approximately 55 holly berries are knitted individually as tiny separate pieces. Each berry begins with just 2 cast-on stitches and is shaped over 6 rows using increases and decreases before being fastened off. The two yarn ends are tightly tied together to form a small, rounded berry shape. This charming detail adds a highly realistic and tactile quality to the finished wreath.

Materials for the Wreath

  • Debbie Bliss Rialto DK in Forest 100 (shade A) – three 50g balls used for the leaves
  • Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino – used for the holly berries (shade referenced in the full pattern PDF)
  • Needles: 3mm (US size 2-3) knitting needles for the berries; needle size for leaves specified in the full pattern
  • Additional materials: florists' wire, green florists' tape, a 30cm wire wreath frame, and beads for decoration
