Product Description
Christmas Stocking Snow Caps shows my more traditional side.
For the Snow Caps Christmas Stocking yarn colors, I chose the much loved and all-time favorite traditional red, white and green. Along with the Christmas Stocking’s more traditional, body and toe shape I just had to include the all-important white fuzzy cuff! And the Chevron stitch pattern adds that extra something special, right? This design is so darn cute, makes you want to get started right now!!
For my stocking I used: Cascade Yarns/220 Superwash, 100% Superwash Wool. 220yds/200m/3.5oz/100g. Colors: #809/Really Red, #817/Aran, #851/Lime - 1 Skein in each color.
Berroco/Plush, 100% Nylon. 90yds/83m/1.75oz/50g. Color: #1900/White – 1 skein.
Choose your favorite Christmas season colors and have a HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS!
Christmas Stocking ~ Snow Caps by Joan Laws
Project Overview
The Snow Caps Christmas Stocking is an intermediate-level knitted decoration designed by Joan Laws. This festive stocking project combines luxurious textures and vibrant holiday colors to create a finished piece measuring 18 inches (46 centimeters) in circumference and 17 inches (43 centimeters) from the top of the stocking to the bottom of the heel. This downloadable PDF pattern is ideal for knitters looking to add handmade charm to their holiday décor.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Snow Caps stocking pattern calls for a combination of premium yarns to achieve its distinctive texture and appearance. The project uses two primary yarn types:
- Berroco Plush Yarn: 100% Nylon composition, providing 90 yards per 1.75 ounces (50 grams) per skein. One skein in color #1900/White is required. This yarn is worked with two strands held together throughout the project.
- Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash: 100% Superwash Wool, offering 220 yards per 3.5 ounces (100 grams) per skein. The pattern incorporates three colors from this line—one skein each of color A #809/Really Red, color B #817/Aran, and color C #851/Lime.
The combination of nylon plush and superwash wool creates both textural interest and practical durability for a holiday stocking that can be cherished year after year.
Needles and Tools
Successful completion of this project requires specific needle sizes and additional knitting tools:
- One Size US11 (8.0 millimeters) 16-inch (40 centimeters) circular needle for the initial cast-on and larger sections
- Two Size US7 (4.5 millimeters) 16-inch (40 centimeters) circular needles for finer gauge work
- Size US7 (4.5 millimeters) double-pointed needles (DPNs) for working the gusset shaping, as the pattern transitions from circular needle construction
- Five stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping points
- A stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding stitches temporarily during construction
- Optional: One square yard of fabric for lining the finished stocking
Gauge and Tension
Achieving proper gauge is essential for this intermediate project. The pattern specifies two different gauges depending on the yarn being worked:
- Berroco Plush Gauge: 8 stitches equal 4 inches (10 centimeters) when two strands of yarn are held together
- Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash Gauge: 20 stitches and 26 rows equal 4 inches (10 centimeters)
Knitters should swatch with their chosen yarn and needle combination to verify gauge before beginning the project, as gauge directly affects the finished stocking's dimensions and fit.
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
The Snow Caps stocking employs several intermediate knitting techniques that make this project suitable for knitters with some experience. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 38 stitches using the larger circular needle and two strands of Berroco Plush held together. This creates the cuff of the stocking.
Circular Knitting: The majority of the stocking is worked in the round using circular needles, which creates seamless fabric and allows for continuous color work and pattern development without the need for seaming.
Gusset Shaping: As the pattern progresses toward the heel, knitters transition from circular needles to double-pointed needles to accommodate the gusset construction. The gusset is a shaped section that creates the three-dimensional heel pocket characteristic of traditional stockings. This technique requires careful stitch management and decreasing to shape the fabric properly.
Yarn Management: The pattern involves working with multiple yarn colors and weights, requiring knitters to manage yarn tension and transitions between the plush nylon and superwash wool yarns to maintain consistent fabric quality.
Stitch Types and Pattern Elements
While the complete stitch-by-stitch details are not fully visible in the provided pattern excerpt, the Snow Caps stocking incorporates fundamental knitting stitches combined with shaping techniques. The
